Please explain why our kids can appear even more autistic than usual when they get sick?!

Oh, yes, Claire is this way, too.
Because it takes so much effort for them to keep thier sensory systems and behavior in what control they can that when they get sick that throws it all off kilter.
Ok, as an example, I suppose you have had bugs where you feel achy all over and you don't want anyone to touch you. Now suppose you pretty much feel like that on a daily basis at least uncomfortable in your skin and not wanting to be touched but you have learned to deal with it. Take a flu bug which is going to add that much more on top of the already consistent discomfort and your coping mechanisms are going to go to the toilet. Same with any of the other sensitivities our kids deal with. Plus with not feeling well anyway their energy to hold up and act normal and 'behave" appropriately drops to the toilet.
That is my thoughts anyway, particularly after reading and getting to know a number of adults on the spectrum and what they struggle with, this makes the most sense to me.
Mike actually gets really really good when he is first sick, followed by a bought of extra grumpiness and autistic stuff.

This is bizarre! Nathan doesn't do this. He becomes more quiet, but actually tries very hard not to be sick. Doesn't require alot from me at all. I have a harder time when Tyler gets sick. He's always whining and crying, and upset about everything! I never know when Nathan is sick. I have to watch him very closely, because he tells me nothing and shows no real symptoms either.
