MRI Question

Okay, I'm naive about this, so I figured who better to ask, than been-there-done-that's? Basically, my questions are:

Is an MRI of the brain (if that is even correct) a way to diagnose? Is it just back up?

How/who referred your child to get an MRI?

Was it valuable information?

What does it show? Or does it show what part of the brain is "mis-firing?"

How torturous is it for the child?

This is my understanding of where MRI's fit in on dx ASD's currently.

There are some differences seen on fMRI's [functional MRI's] which map which parts of the brain are active, but that's cutting edge research and not routinely done.

As the PP said, MRI's are not typically used for autism diagnostic purposes.

It sounds like you may be looking for a neuropsychological assessment.

Wow, your family has been through a lot of MRI's. Thank you for the information - I knew I came to the right place. Good to know it's not going to help me learn more about how/why - I wasn't quite sure how he'd handle an MRI.

Wow, thank you Andrea for your huge answer! Good information and I knew I came to the right place for answers. You explained it well. Now I don't feel so "dumb". I'm guessing we would have been informed of an MRI if any of the Dr.'s thought it necessary. Now my next tackle, ADHD meds . . . . new research begins.

Thanks again, I appreciate all your thoughts!
