My house is a giant mess...always!!!

Anyone one else have the house of permanent disaster ??? What I mean is the constant mess. We moved from a dcent sized house in md to a McMansion in suburban Atlanta and even allotted the kids an entire finished attic space,,,....guess what, the rest of the house (inc the master bedrom....yes, my room) is still a toy junkyard. I clean up and within minutes it's a disaster again. The boys do understand on Sundays it's clean their rooms day (and fair dues, Liam at least gets this), but the other 6 days of the week is a disaster. How can I reclaim my house again?????
Everytime I walk into another's house I'm reminded how disastrous mine is,....sigh

I hear ya sweetie, I hear ya!
*Swims through clothes, pokemon, littlest pet shop, plasma dragons and "dang, just stepped on lego" *
The only control I have is that the toys must stay in the bedrooms and not be falling out of the room and down the hall. If I see it, it goes into the "toy prison" (also lovingly named toy timeout) for 1 week. ( or til I forget it was when I took it from them). Other than that, not much gets completely taken care of. You are not alone. We go to other people's houses and my husband will tell me "She's got 3 kids and look how awesome her house is". Makes me feel like a total failure for swimming thru the toys like we do. My response has become "There is more important things in life than cleaning. Is my son going to remember Mom being at the park with them playing tickle monster tag, or that his clothes were always folded/ironed and placed in the right drawer.?" I pick and choose my battles and I feel that my son knowing to say Hello Sir, and Yes Ma'am far outweigh if the dishes sat in the sink all day or not.
Now this is the best compliment I have ever gotten from a neighbor and I'll share it with you guys now. My neighbor came over and made some comment like "Looks like a tornado came thru here"... then looks over and sees both my children dressed, fed, and watching tv while waiting for their school buses and said "Why can't my children behave like that?". Lil Vic looked up at him and said "Mr. I..
Always and permanently here, too! The kids' therapist keeps telling me that I need to lower my expectations, but I don't know if I can lower my expectations past the condemnable condition it's in. Fortunately my kids aren't Lego obsessed, so I was able to get rid of the Legos, building blocks, and other similar toys with a billion small pieces that were never used for anything except scattering, throwing at siblings, etc.
Worse than the toys always being scattered, though, are the papers, trash, food, etc., that the kids constantly drop throughout the house. Augh! Periodically I purge a few tons of stuff and I regain my sanity temporarily. Those are nice moments!
What is this sanity you speak of? I know pulling my hair out and not pulling my hair out. Sometimes I'm multi-talented and pull my hair out while I sleep. LOL. I can only assume this sanity you speak of is that of those times when I do not pull my hair out.
I am SO glad I am not the only one!

Christina,
I also have anxiety when I hear a knock on the door.
OH MY GOODNESS!!!!!! I thought it was just MY house!!!!!!
I had a breakdown in December & part of it was the fact that the house had just gotten soooo out of control. Two of my very best friends were let in & the 3 of us spent 3 hours just picking up & chucking out. I felt soooo much better with just having a clean house.
Of course, it gets messy again, but I am confident that it will NEVER get to the point it was before. I have got rid of a lot of toys, but, as someone else said, it is the papers, the trash, the food & drawing on everything, the place just never looks 'nice'.
Thankyou for letting us know we are all not alone. There are sooooo many other 'things' that go along with this ride that others just don't see. I also dread a knock on the door & rarely let people in!!
I thought it was just me....!!
It does really get to me sometimes, particularly as I work full-time and don't have the time or energy to clean up often, and I resent the time and energy

Hi from teh messy house in NY.. Trust me my house isn't much better. I have rooms that have been toy heaven for years. I have a 3 bedroom ranch.
In that house are 3 boys, 2 dogs(collies so factor in their fur) 1 cat and us. I do try hard to maintain my house. But then I go through periods where I am working alot of hours and running in 50 million directions. I am trying to get rooms repainted and just done. We have been in our house 15 years and it still looks half done. My DH has a way of starting projects and not following through;. I get into major meltdowns when I know I will be entertaining (esp my family who have perferrrct houses_ And I swear i will not let the house get back to where ti was and yet..
I am sitting here prefering the computer over cleaning my bathroom.
I know there are well groups and stuff like Flylady.com which can help those of us in the world of well poor housekeeping skills. Buti have to gear myself up for that./ Just like right now trying to gear myself up to losing the next 10-15 pounds I need to lose. I need a quick swift kick in the A$$.
On the otherhand I just keep saying to myself.. Well they keep saying that Autism can have genteitc roots and maybe my executive functions can only go so far.
Maybe we we can start our own little Flylady type of section here to help keep us moms better organized.
And help with our diets...
Well.lol.

Well since I only have one child it's alot easier for me. I hate clutter and this house has awesome storage.....I also get rid of crap....you don't wear in 2 yrs--good bye
Adam's toys get picked up at the end of the day or when he's out of the house. I clean for a living and it's just in me to pick up. Contradicting myself in the next breath, I HATE WASHING CLOTHES, I'll go 2 weeks and I'm not kidding when I say that. Not only that too, my dresser has SO much dust on it right now you can write your name in it..............SHAME ON ME
