Need help understanding my DS

I have posted here about my DS but it was a year or two back. DS is 10 and was just recently dxed with a form of autism. I am not even sure which one at the moment (was told but she wouldn’t put it in writing but he sees the psychiatrist on Tuesday and I will get more information then) but it was a mild form and to deal with social issues. I am not shocked by this or upset but I don't know how to help him and sometimes I have a hard time believing he can not help himself when he acts up.

This journey started when he was 2 in a half. I was pregnant with my 3rd and he started running away in public. Over the next couple of years we dealt with him having melt downs any time we went some where new (like Drs offices but he never acts out when we go to the dentist even if it is a new one). At home when he is upset or frustrated he lashes out with violence at anyone, or he takes off running, sometimes he throws things while laughing (but the look on his face is a smile but one that seems confused and pained, does that make sense?). At school if he gets frustrated or upset he gets emotional and cries. He can break the rules but no one else can, he gets real upset most days when

Sorry I am a day late =). Was having computer troubles, not feeling well, and am ready to scream. Now his counselor and psychiatrist are saying they are not sure that he has autism but yes he has some components but again with the not enough to be classified as autistic. The shrink changed his med from Concerta to straight Ritalin and I am not sure how I feel about this. I know Concerta is Ritalin but I still am not happy about this change. The Concerta was working just Erick felt it was wearing off to early and that was why at night he was having so much trouble and wanted something to help him at night. The thought behind this is when Concerta leaves wears off they crash quickly and this may be why he was having so many problems at night. With the straight Ritalin it is suppose to gradually wear off and the Dr is hoping this helps him not flip at night.

googolplex - We were doing a chore chart and had a what to do chart (mainly for me so I remembered to send them for a bath before it was bedtime because I am not good with sticking to routines). I suggested this again to him but he didn't like the idea. He ended up telling his counselor he does not like charts because they are to bossy so she suggested a simple one. This one just has morning, afternoon and night. I tell him what to do at what ever time of day and if he does it he gets a sticker and the chart isn't telling him what to do. I haven't tried this yet but I am going to start it tomorrow morning and see how it works out. I will try one that shows what to do when you go to bed and let you know if that helps. maybe seeing that brushing teeth is part of going to bed he will see that he can brush his teeth when sent to bed?

Sorry, I didn't see your reply till now. We "met" on the Parenting Issues board, I think, quite a while back. You were still with your H back then.

The sleeping problems might be helped with a weighted blanket. Are they not doing anything for his sensory problems? Also, how is ritalin supposed to help him?
