Neuro appt today / SID

We had a neuro appt today. I DO NOT LIKE THAT DOCTOR!!! We saw him when ds was 3 and I didn't like him then and I don't like him now. He's the only neuro office in town. When ds was 3 he said ds might grow out of these things and it might be coincidence. Well I got a 2nd opinion and the other neuro (in a town an hour away) said he had pdd/nos. Well now the school's accepted him as spec ed but b/c of speech.
So I got back to the neuro b/c I want my own eval and the neuro said he still doesn't think it's anything autistic related--he said that it could be sensory integration disorder and he wants an OT to eval him (which is fine). It's just funny because his preschool teacher said he has some sort of ASD (and she has a son on the spectrum) and his current teacher has already requested another autism eval through the school, his pedi, and another neuro said the same thing.
When is this guy going to jump on the wagon with us??? Hello???
I just hate being talked down to by doctors.

Kate,
It can be difficult to get an ASD DX, especially if the child does not present as "classic" ASD. The criteria are so open to interpertation, and some Drs, -especially older ones are not too up-to-speed on how the world of ASDs is changing. -They still go by what they learned in med school 20/30 years ago, KWIM? Also, some are reluctant to give such a serious DX if there is any doubt in their minds that it may not be 100%.
It is encouraging that he at least heard of SID. He can't be *that* behind the times.
I had/have the same problem with my kids. My son was not DXed until 5½, and the school district is *still* disputing the DX (he is now 7), because he is so *outgoing*, and behaves totally differently at school than at home.
It is very frustrating.
((((hugs))))

The doctor asked me does he pretent play? Yes. Make eye contact? Yes. Understand emotion? Yes. Well, ok, he doesn't have it.
Nevermind the fact that he stems like crazy, freaks out if his shoes aren't in the exact same place by the door w/ the velcro the exact same way every day, stairs at lights, repeats the same thing over and over and over, walks around with a lemon juicer attached to him, freaks out in a classroom with other kids, has tantrums that lasts an hour, can't stand to have pants on his legs, behind in speech, social skills, has no ability to have a 2 way conversation, etc. etc.
Just very frustrated....

Sometimes it is worth travelling for a good doctor.
Do you need to continue to see a neuro on a more regular basis due to meds or something? If not usually you see them about 1-2 times a year. Can you make the one an hour away your regular neuro though your insurance? Honestly that is what I do and have always done. Even when it was monthly checks it was worth the drive and gas to have someone I felt comfortable with.
Honestly, at this point I don't even see our neuro anymore though they are all due to see her again. I just didn't find it helpful at all. I am getting more out of the kids psychologist, schools, and therapy that I have been doing.
In the beginning we had a great neuro in Mass that I saw and helped me come up with a treatment plan and access the right testing and treatment for Cait. So in the beggining if you can find a good one that might help. But more than an actualy neuro I found what I needed was kind of a main professional who understood ASD's and can help me weed my way through the process.
Currently I use a psychologist who specializes. She is also my personal therapist. She has great idea and kind of is the team leader (other than me. I am the main team leader and she is my go to person to help me navigate the ASD world since she isn't emotionally attached like I am).
Good luck.

Renee,
No, he's not on meds.
The reason I went back to him is becasue I wanted to take Dylan to a therapy place that would do an autism evaluation on him however they wouldn't do it w/out a doctor referral. I've heard great things about this place from other parents so I went back to the neuro to try and get the referral.
The doctor gave me a referral to get an evaluation but to another place, not the one I wanted. I am thinking I might make an appt with my doctor an hour away and tell him that I want a referral to the place I want.
I don't know....I am just having a bad day today and I've already cried three times today!
