there are certain screening type things docs or others can do to see if there may be some neurological issues going on. It is common for ASD kids to see a neurologist as it is considered a neurological issue.
Typically such screening may check balance, reflexes, things like touching finger to nose, crossing the midline, etc. I never had a "neuro" screen per se but starting young both the kids showed some obvious neuro issues and were referred to a neurologist. Each saw one starting at about 3yo. I am assuming some of the stuff that a dev. ped would do in a screen would be some of the same stuff I have seen the neuro do which is some of the same stuff even my OT boss will do.
