New class assignment

I went to my online class orientation tonight. There is a huge assignment for the end of the term (kind of the biggest one of the semester) and I am LOVING IT!!!!!!!
They (we but this won't be a stretch for me) have to role play being a family with a child with special needs. Pretty significant needs so something like CP, Downs, autism, etc. Something that requires lots of time, money and such from families. Add onto that the family is low income. Basically it is a lesson in learning what it is like to be us. How do you access the support services, funding and resources you need? What kind of toll does it take on the family in time, finances, endurance, etc? What kind of resources are there in the community, through insurance. How do families access all those and keep them straight.
Ok, other than the low income (we are more moderate income) I would say basically they have to learn what it is to be us.
OHHHHH this is going to be SWEET!

Renee,
I think in theory that sounds great! but I think it would tick me off in the end because I don't think people esp most typical age college students could possibly get the whole "toll on the family" thing that having a child (or more than one) w/ special needs actually takes on a family, marriage and mother/father. They just won't have an emotional tie, and I'm afraid that would not set well with me. I'm thankful that they have you in the class, so I'm sure you'll impart some good info to all of them. I think it's important for students to have this kind of assignment because if you're going to be in special ed you will have to deal w/ families and you need some empathy (I find teachers w/ kids who have special needs much more willing to work w/ us than most others).

ROTFLOL
Priceless! Ummm, maybe you should be teaching this class???

As ds would say "I smell an A!"
as in A grade
Good luck, sounds like your kind of assigment.

It's as if they CREATED this assignment just for you!!!
Granted, nobody can truly understand what it is we go through, but it'll be nice to know they're at LEAST getting a glimpse into our world.
Oh man, if only Bear's teacher this year had a CLUE about what we go through...my life would be soooo much easier.
Amy
..and you were worried about going back to school.
Yep. "A"s in the bag for this one.

Why can't I reply to all? Darn stupid free membership!
I am going to try my level best to at least help these folks get a small glimpse of what it is REALLY like beyond the role play. I may start collecting quotes from friends if you all would be ok with that. Perhaps I will start a new thread about it. Let me know what you all think.
I am glad they are doing this assignment (that little emoticon was supposed to be an evil grin) but at the same time I am nervous about doing it. Alot of that stuff is very personal to me and I am not sure how comfortable I am with sharing it with a bunch of folks I don't know who have no clue. It is a masters level course but most of these ladies either just finished there undergrad or are general ed teachers who have to update thier credential and likely already have alot of that attitude.
Oh, and I think I need to back off and relax a bit. In class last night she was going over how she grades attendance and participation by how she can look up what you have done in the class. She used me as an example of a "good" student but I think I seemed neurotic. I had in at least 2x the time of everyone else and 4 times as much reading on different articles. Some people haven't even started the class! HELLOOOOOO!
Well at least I know this one is an easy A.

Ok I admit I have diahrea of the fingers. Blame that other friend. It is all her fault.
Here is an idea.
When ever people tell me how cute my kids are I usually tell them yeah right
And that I rent them out for parties.
Put up a sign - true Aspie for rent to help with assignment. Learn what it really is all about. Get to fight with the teachers and doctors for a clear cut dx. Learn that some insurance compnaies Are true pains in that they limit you to only certain MDs so you may not get the best. Or better yet they Might consider certain disablities as mental and may not cover them at all or have such a high deductible that you might reach it by the end of the year before the insurance kicks in... And fill in the rrst of your blanks.

I'm fine with it! Let's educate the next generation.

There is an observation portion of the assignment. I wanted to rent them out for that so that I could have a spy in Cait's class and see what loads of what is going on there, lol.
I didn't have the guts to put that out there though.
