My name is Linda and I have an 11 yo. daughter who has PDD . It is fairly mild; her main issues are speech delay and some emotional immaturity . My problem is she her teeth are very crowded and she has nearly all of her permanent teeth. Her dentist is great but he keeps telling me she can wait a while before getting braces. I disagree and think she needs to be at least assessed now. My older son has a wonderful orthodontist whom I would send her to . She is somewhat dentist phobic and

My 9yo aspie dd has braces on her front teeth. She has had a palette expander in the past as well. She has done extremely well with it but the molds were the worst for her mostly because she has a very tricky gag reflex. All I can suggest there if that is a problem with your dd is to make sure her stomach is empty before the appt and give her some benedryl or even car sick meds. Either will help settle the stomach a bit. And bring a baggy along just in case. ;)

I was worried that Haley would have a hard time with the braces and palette expander because she is so sensitive but she has been great. Neither has bothered her in the least. She just gets frustrated from time to time because she can't have some of her favorite candies. Other than that we have had zero problems.

Haley's teeth are a total mess which is why we couldn't wait on the orthodontics. She has huge teeth stuffed in a tiny mouth. Poor kid. She's supposed to get more brackets put on next month.

I hope all goes well!

my 13 yo AS dd has braces. We have had issues with it but different ones than you. I know in our case the ortho's around here all do free initial assessments that are really low stress. Our dd doesn't have some of those fears, she is actually pretty good about that stuff at docs typically. There have been a few situations but overall she has a high pain tolerance. But we have had other issues for sure. One is the braces care and currently getting her to wear the dang bands.

Thanks for the help. I think once she has them on she will be fine. Her brother already has them and she trys very hard to be like him. It's just going to be getting them on that I think will be a challenge. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Linda,

I don't have any advice about braces. (I'm glad to see you got some already), but I wanted to welcome you to the board.

Feel free to stick around, to ask any questions you need

My dd now 14 had to have her palate expander, but orthodontist went with old method. She had braces on for several years and now is at the retainer phase. I listened to the workers and when they suggested meds for pain for certain stages especially when new bands were put on or when bands were tightened. It really helped dd to be able to pick her fav colors on the tooth protectors.
The retainer is the color and markings of a ladybug...easy to see and identify.
She has a row of wiggles at back to keep her from doing the tongue thrusting.

I think she will definitely need some pain med afterward; my son usually does for a day or two. She will like picking her own colours so I can probably use that to talk it up a bit.
