He's 4 yr 8 mo. We've been concerned about him for a couple of years, but the pediatrician said he was developing within normal ranges. Speech was slow to come so we did the hearing tests. Hearing is perfect. Walked at 14 mos. (late for my 4 other kids who all walked before 11 mos.) We thought maybe he was just on his own timetable and had his own drummer and all that. Started speech therapy last year. But when he got into Pre-k the teacher (very good and great with the kids) noticed some atypical behaviors (putting himself in quiet time a lot, not joining in play with others or not joining appropriately, grinding teeth, stimming behaviors, problems with transitions.) She asked if I would agree to have a psych. observe in class. I was all for it. Finally, I thought, someone who can tell me what's going on. So she comes and watches DS, then calls in another psych whose specialty is AS. This

Welcome! Just a quick post from me, as it's time to get ds up and ready for school. It sounds like you're on the right track for getting a diagnosis and have lots of knowledgeable people in your corner.

As far as good reading (I feel like I'm becoming a "librarian" for AS books lately - LOL), I would highly recommend "Quirky Kids" by Perri Klass, M.D. and Eileen Costello M.D.

Again, welcome!

Laurie (mom to Alex, 8 yrs., AS)

Hi there and welcome,

I was going to post something very similar to another mom who recently had gotten a diagnosis for her child. Your right. None of us want a diagnosis for our kids, however, whether or not they have the official label doesn't change the fact that they are AS. They are the same child with or without it. They are AS with or without it. All the label does is tell us more about thier learning style and the way they process as well as help us access the right kinds of supports and services for thier needs.

SOmetimes I have felt like I wished I had never persued a diagnosis for my kids. Like by some magical way if I didn't have the label they wouldn't be aspergers. I am so silly! YOu are doing great to have him evaluated early and get an early start on support.

Welcome to the board!

My story is similiar to yours! My son is 7 and in 1st grade. We always thought he was a bit different (we also have a 9yr old son). Nathan also had a speech delay, which I worked on at home, and got him talking well enough by the time preschool started. His teacher informed me of her concerns about 3mo into school. She had a couple ladies from the school district come in and observe him. And they suggested that he come in for an evaluation by their team of spec ed teachers and school psychologist.

Anyway, he qualified for services, but they couldn't positively say that he was autistic. We ended up taking him to a neuropsychologist, who was able to give us a dx of high functioning autism.

Good luck on your son's eval! Let us know how it goes. I'm glad you found us here, it's a great place to share stories and gain lots of info.

Hello, I haven't been to this board for very long but thought I'd welcome you and good luck tomorrow. My son is 6 and had seen the doc yesterday. I actually feel more at ease now that we do have a diagnosis for my son. Part me would have liked to have a son without any mental issues but I've known for quite sometime there was something quirky about my son. Now having an official diagnosis will help me help my son. The school has been great so far for my son but this, too, will help them help my son. I don't have any reading recommendations for you. Good luck tomorrow.

Hi and welcome to the board. I hope everything goes okay for you tommorrow and that you get some answers to things you have probably wondered about for a while now.
