I feel so stupid. I am taking a special ed class and we are studying the spectrum. Of course we are talking about the different symptoms and I'm thinking(that's just like Gram). Here are the things he does-he will be 6 in 3 weeks.
He has always walked on his toes,he will walk normal if he has shoes on.
Has always lined up toys. For ex, he has a box of action figures and will line them up across the room. When he does this he gets upset if I put them up or if they get moved.
As a toddler he constantly stacked cans of food. We all bought him toys that he could squeeze because he wanted ("squeezes").
He will watch a movie and then repeat the whole plot and some exact lines to me. He gets very upset if he gets interrupted while telling this. He paces(on his toes) and wrings his hands or flicks his fingers while talking.
Everyday when he gets home from school he will go in our living room and run or jump from the couch to the chair and make a ppppaaash noise. He will do this until I call him usually. Sometimes he will stop by himself. When he stops by himself he will do it at least 15 min. One day when he stayed with my sister he did this all day. She called me to tell me he had ran around in the same circle all day making that noise. I think he probably did this because he was staying somewhere else which he hates to do.
He has always been attached to weird items. He especially loves multiples of items. At one time it was batteries(he would carry them everywhere and sleep with them in his hands)He loves globes and knows where lots of countries are located, has a rock collection and knows all the rock names and they have to stay in a certain slot with the piece of paper that tells about them and it is tragedy if they are not in the right place. He has always had to carry multiples in his pockets. Likes to look at the atlas and maps.
In preschool he did not play with the other children. He told the preschool teacher that he would rather work. When they would have play time he would sit in his seat and draw.
He has always loved to write or draw, and it is usually the same thing over and over. We were at a football game last night and there were a lot of children playing,1 ask him to throw football, but he wouldn't. He would much rather be with adults.
He will only eat a few things mostly carbs.
He does not understand when someone is kidding.
I have always just thought he was quirky, smart, and shy.

Awww sweetie, pls don't feel stupid!
Hi!
Please don't ever feel stupid.

Christine
Welcome to the board!! First off, don't ever think you are stupid for "not seeing it" cause alot of us momma bears really didn't see it right away either. I just thought my boy was quirky and speech delayed untill the day the dx came and then ---WHAM a kick to the gut.
As Lainie and Christine both mentioned, some kids don't get a dx until later. This is not uncommon. Seeking out what your child needs such as a possible dx and therepy should be your concern at the moment, not so much beating yourself up for "not seeing it".
Hope you stick around. Feel free to ask any questions you may have. This is a great group of gals who have been around the block a few times.
((hugs))
