the new plan

We had a two hour team meeting with the autism consultants today. They told the team basically they were being blinded by Kyle's strengths. They also said changes need to be made right now because he's escalating and being re-inforced for his meld downs. The plan is Kyle will have a detailed visual schedule for each class period. It will say what the expectations are for work, which is going to be greatly reduced for a while, and the amount of time he needs to stay in class, probably like 10 mins to start. Then he will go to his "office". The are going to partition off a corner of the special education teachers room for his office. He'll have his sensory stuff and most likely his own computer. (he's never going to want to leave his office, lol) When he works for X amount of time he will be re-inforced with a preferred activity which may include computer games. They are still going to work on teaching him to communicate and ask for a break. I don't think he'll need one if he has his own "office". Kyle seemed to really like the idea. The plan is once he is de-stressed and has conqured learning to express his needs then to extend slowly and methodically the educational demands and mainstreaming time. We are also going to meet weekly to monitor his progress. They are supposed to keep better stats, less ancedotal notes, to keep track if its working or not. I asked for more/better training for the aide. The autism team agreed to work with her one-on-one and with her & Kyle togeather. They also have a distric week long training coming up in March I think. So I think this might work for him. They said they think they can have it all in place by Monday. The principal is supposed to call me by the end of the day and let me know how its coming along.

BTW, Kyle had a great day today. He refused to go to school this morning untill I said I could pick him up at noon. I'm glad he ended the week on a good note.

Woo hoooo! I'm so glad you got someone to do something for Kyle and quickly! I hope it all works out for him and they stick to it! The plan sounds good and like it will at least make him more calm and able to handle school.

Yeah Samantha! That sounds great. And I'm so jealous lol. Where do you live again lol? I should move there.

I don't even have an IEP or Dx yet, and my sons stupid teacher has suggested I do Independent Study to solve his problems at school... Arghhhhh. I think she just wants to brush him off and not help him at all :(.

Good luck hon!

Samantha,

Sounds like a good plan. When do you all go back to school? Do you have Monday off as well? I will be interested to hear how it goes for Kyle.
