On a not so happy note

So a few weeks ago (shortly after Thanksgiving) I posted about the miracle of miracles we'd been witnessing with our youngest DD (6 y/o autie) since starting her on an extremely low dose of Zoloft. Everything continued to go beautifully until it came time to refill the Rx. We got the refill bottle home and realized that the dosage was 1/4 of what the original bottle had read. We assumed it was a mistake on behalf of the pharmacy so DH took it back to complain.

The next day we get a call from the MD's office. Yes, there was a mistake...but it was with the ORIGINAL Rx. The phramacist had instructed us (or rather, the bottle had instructed us) to give our child 3x's more medication than what her doctor wanted to start her on. Evidently the nurse chewed the pharmacist a new one.

The compromise was to cut the original dosage (the incorrect one) in half. But now our daughter's mood has changed dramatically- and certainly for the worse. We're back to the constant meltdowns, anxiety, etc.

I doubt that the original amount of medication was harmful to her...I think our doctor was just being extremely conservative. But now I'm not sure what to do. If it won't hurt her, then I want to go back to the original dosage. (We go back to see the doctor on Thurs.) But if it could hurt her, I'm going to have to explain to the entire family, and everybody at school that the "Temporarily Fabulous Claire" isn't coming back.

WEll, it sounds like the first dose was right for her. How long was she on it? Was it continuing to work the entire time?

Today is only Tuesday and Christmas is around the bend with extra stress you want to get her through. I would call the doc today and tell him this. NO reason he can't tell you to use what you have to up her dose some until you see him thursday. Then She has 2 extra days to get into the grove, adjust and calm down before Christmas.

Perhaps he can even go up to 3/4 the original dose?

Sending you Hugs.....

I hope she is feeling better soon. Do you think she's having withdrawl symptoms? They can be terrible with some antidepressants.

I would call the doctor too. My dd was on zoloft as a teen and found out she stopped on her own and she freaked out a bit. When I found out I promplty started monitering it better (which is really what I should of done in the first place, but at that time it was before the warning of the deep depression and suicidal thoughts teens and kids can have stopping zoloft.)

You can't go wrong with telling your doctor whats happening. Its important.

I recently went on lexapro and my doctor told me anything that happens (depression, etc)or changes, you need to call me immediatly.

just a side note, any of the few times i have restarted prozac, i truly can feel a huge difference within 24 hours as can my mom when she takes it. so even though the norm for anti-dep's is weeks, i do believe it can be instantanious when some people have serious serotonin responses...
