DH was asked to pick up Temple Grandin from the Airport for the San Diego ASA conference and he said, "na, thanks anyway". ROFLMBO.
Figures. So many would jump at the chance. Neither of us are big on the whole celebrity thing and honest I have never been able to read a full one of her books or listen to a whole speech. I don't know why, lol. So I would feel like a knucklehead.
He also had the opportunity to attend the darn conference for free because he is working it, but no. He passed the savings onto his support staff and is hoping his district reimburses him. I am hoping regional center reimburses me. Oh well. Between the 2 of us we are dropping 400 on the weekend. Man that could have been a nice vacation.
I haven't been to a big autism conference in years though so it is time. This year is a good one. In fact I am trying to figure out how to bilocate and hit all but one of the break out sessions. The only parts I am not really interested in is Temple and her mom. Seen it.
Funny. No longer do I feel the need to hear from other people in my shoes. I used to but now I don't need them to tell me what is going to be like. BTDT. Have enough interesting stuff going on here thank you. lol.
Renee

Funny, I have never been able to get through one of her books either, and I usually eat that kind of stuff up.
You just reminded me I forgot to go listen to Temple speak. So, I guess according to you and your dh I didn't miss much? ROTFLOL
Have a good time at your conference.
Samantha
I saw her last summer and I have to admit at times she was so rehearshed it was hard to listen to her. Parts of it I found interesting just because it was the first time I'd ever heard the point of view of the person living with Autism rather than the parent/family member. I expected her to talk a lot about her work but thankfully she didn't. All in all it was worth the money.

I am excited about it because of the other topics. The theme is "Preparing for the Future Today" and the topics mostly include things that relate to the middle school and teen years, transitions, and some great communication.
The other Main speakers are Michelle Garcia Winner (one of my favorites. Does social language stuff), Barbara Doyle and Dr. Peter Gerhardt. All very knowledgable and great in the field. Chantal Sicile-Kira is there as well doing some small parts and moderating. She is local here so she is at lots of stuff.
Topics include
-social thinking and language
-organizing strategies for homework and the real world
-really teaching reading to people with ASD's (finding this to be a big problem for hyperlexic dd now that she is in middle school)
-social and daily living skills to teens
-developing talents at home and school
-transition planning for competent adulthood
-safe and independent life planning
-sexuality and learners with ASD
-Mind mapping - new way to teach visual learners

Too funny, Renee!

OMG Renee, can't believe your dh (lol)! I am going to the conf all day Friday and my dh is going all day Saturday. So he gets to see Temple Grandin speak and I'll get to see her mother speak. I'm actually thinking of taking the coaster because I'm freaking over the thought of rush hour traffic both ways! I don't know guess I have to figure out how to get from coaster station to the conf area.
Molly
I am going down late on Friday or I would offer to carpool with you. If you take the coaster down I may be able to give you a ride home. DH is staying for the meet and greet. I doubt I will. I didn't pay the extra for it and I want to get back to the kids before then. You are on my way home.
Unfortunately I have to get my kids to school first on Friday and Cait has late start so I won't get there until 10ish. Perhaps we should meet during break for coffee or something?
Renee
Thanks so much for the offer! That would be great. I've been meaning to call you, so I will do that soon and we'll talk more.
Thanks! Thanks! Thanks!
Molly
