Evelyn, I can so relate! When Ian was in Kindergarden we had his whole class at our house. I was a nervous wreck. It turned out fine. I'll tell you what we did.
We had musical tombstones and pin the nose on the jackolantern. The musical tombstones got a little nuts and the activities didn't last nearly as long as I thought they would. Yet, six kids that age cannot just freeplay in your house without any structure. At least that was my experience.
Do you think they would do a craft or could you get them interested in carving a jackolantern? They could scoop out the seeds and help you decide what kind of face to carve out. Hopefully the other moms here will also have some ideas. I'm planning a party for Ian's class at school, but the party is in the class and only about 30 minutes. Still, I'm very nervous about it. If it turns out badly his whole class will know what a loser of a party planner I am!!! I'm so scared of 3rd graders, LOL!
You will have your hands full, but I think you will be okay if you keep it under about an hour to an hour and a half. When are you having the party? Halloween night?

Oh Evelyn! If I still lived in the Bay Area I'd vollunteer to help out! I think about it... a boy with autism, a boy who doesn't speak English, a boy with food allergies, and a girl who deserves a serious pat on the back. I imagine the first three rarely get invited anywhere, and when they do Mom or some other person is hovering and nervous (with every right).
If I were there I'd vollunteer to do the cooking, including getting together with Food Allergies' mom and working out a menu. If you find out what the allergies are I'd be happy to help track down easy recipes for you to use. Oh, and I speak a little Japanese (not much, just enough to get buy while shopping in Tokyo).
For a craft - how about painting small pumpkins instead of carving one big one? It can double as a party favor for each child to take home.
You are brave :) Luckily Josh has shown no sign of wanting to have kids over - our little 2 bedroom house wouldn't know what hit it!
Martha did a really cool thing where they covered little pumpkins with glitter! Check out her site.

Thanks everyone, for your ideas.
See if there's one at your church/school you can borrow.
Or - do you have a picnic table that could be brought into the garage?
Keep it loose and low key and don't have ridiculous expectations for yourself and
My theory when teaching in preschool was always "If I don't have a plan, how do I know what went wrong?" I always planned more activities than I thought could possibly be done in the available time... then if something goes quick or just flops you have a backup! :)
