This post is not for the weak at heart or those with weak stomachs.

I understand that bowel *issues* are not uncommon for AS kids.

If you think he needs something more than digestive enzymes, Miralax is really wonderful stuff. Of course it's also expensive (the generic is still available through a prescription, if that's cheaper for you). Another natural thing you can try is probiotic supplements. They help a little but not enough for my kids (my 12yo AS dd is classified as having a bowel "dysmotility" -- beyond encopresis -- and takes multiple doses of laxatives and enemas routinely).

Of course you know better than I, but is it possible that your ds isn't just having anxieties about or forgetting to use the toilet but that he actually has loss of bowel control? That's very common when you're routinely blocked up. You lose muscle control, so you can't determine when/how much bm you expel. The bowels have to be thoroughly evacuated then kept clear, so the muscles can shrink back to normal size, so muscle control can be regained. It's a months- to years-long process.

Well, I do know that he has had blockage in the past and I'm sure it's rearing its ugly head again.

WOW!!! That is an amazing discovery. I wish that would answer our problems :( Tonight I had to give the little guy an enema. I discovered he put a pull up on on his own, which usually means there's poopy problems going on. Felt his belly and sure enough - he had something in there. Enema worked fast so hopefully he can go to school tomorrow.

i feel your discomfort. son is 9 yrs old and still makes a mess of himself and the bathroom. sometimes i have him use a wash cloth to wipe himself. i have to bleach the toilet, seat and surrounding floor at least once a day. he pees without lifting the seat. he leaves little bits of soiled toilet paper rolled up on the bathroom floor. for better or worse he poops only at home.

hopefully this too shall pass.

Hi,my son who will be 9 soon, has just stopped pooping in his pants. The wet wipes are a great idea and worked for my son in about a month.Only problem now is he runs into the bedroom for me to check if he is clean.Seeing so much just after tea can upset your stomach a little.

Another natural thing you can try with your ds is magnesium supplements.

My 12yo had been taking 3-4 doses of Miralax plus 3 Senekot-S (stool softener plus laxative) per day and not seeing much improvement. About a month ago I began adding magnesium, probiotics and Omega-3 supplements to dd diet. Dd is now down to 2-3 Miralax plus 1 Senekot-S daily, so one or more of her new supplements is helping her quite a bit. We'll keep watching her to see if we can wean down any further from the traditional meds.
