The kids slept over at thier grandparents last night when DH and I went to a concert (gonna post separate about that). 2 at my moms, and 2 at my inlaws.

We picked up Mike and Emily, and though he loves being at my moms you can tell he worked very hard at being extra good and had had extra sugar (I had allowed it at grandmas. She still limited but was more than usual). Then silly us decide to go to Sams Club.

We are in Sam's and Mike is out there. Very stimmy, animated, goofy, etc. He definitely didn't blend in, lol. Well we go past the organic peanut butter and Mike starts obsessing on it doing these little lines. Suddenly he is making his right hand talk this wierd Mike language. Same thing over and over then turns and does it to me and says "ouerwoieuwslaj...My right hand says it hates organic peanut butter. aahksjhdfkajsh....Organic peanut butter is evil. adsajsljkdfjlkawe....My right hand cannot touch organic peanut butter" He is doing this all the way through the line and out to the parking lot in his little robot . You should have SEEN the look the checkout lady gave us.

Yeah, we blend.

lmbo!! blending in is way overrated :D

any clue why he fixiated on the organic peanut butter?

my ds weirds people out with his extensive knowledge of Yu-gi-oh! cards. he's almost 7, but he still looks about 4, and hearing words like "summoned" come out of his mouth perfectly pronounced really seems to freak people out :D

Well, they have always had a healthy diet, but a number of months ago we changed it to very low/no sugar and organic. That coupled with the fact that they taught nutrition and how to read nutrition labels in school last year and the whole nutrition thing is kind of a fixation currently.

He usually doesn't give me a problem at all about the organic peanut butter anymorenow that it is routine. He often obsesses on how he thinks it is great. What a great idea, it is healthier, etc. But here is what I think the issue was (Tell me this kid isn't on the spectrum). We usually buy that brand of organic peanut butter in Costco. We were in Sam's club today and noticed it there for the first time and commented that they had begun carrying it there. Oooops. A change. They changed thier products to include organic peanut butter and BAM the boy has a problem with it.

We switched months ago at home. It wasn't the taste of it he balked at, it was the change. But today he started in on we should buy our old brand of peanut butter (that they happen to always have at Sam's) and not the new one. Took me forever to figure out why he had a problem with it today and he wasn't in a place where he would tell me. Sometimes he is and sometimes he isn't.

As far as big words, do you ever noticing him using these really big words, but not quite correctly? I notice that alot with both of them. Also, over the last year or so when doing more independent work, I have noticed Cait mispronouncing words while talking as well as using them not quite right. Kind of a hyperlexic thing where she will read it phonetically the way she thinks it should be and makes mistakes in understanding the context clues.

LOL yes, a change :D. How dare Sam's club make changes in what they carry lol

have you noticed any great improvements in his behavior since going to organic? I'd love to do that in my family, but we just can't afford it. I'd really like to try out organic chicken. My SO is allergic to almost any type of "fowl" (chicken, turkey, etc), but I have a feeling it's more the chemicals, growth agents & such being used in comercial production. Of course, he has no problems with any beef, so my theory may fall apart there lol

Actually Finn does tend to use the big words correctly, using them the exact way they are used in the game (Yu-gi-oh!). With the example of summoned, he will talk about the 3 different ways in which you can "summon" a creature in the game. Truth is, he tends to avoid using big words except in situations where he's talking about Yu-gi-oh! or roleplaying. Both subjects are obsessions, stimms for him. He often uses Yu-gi-oh! as a social security blanket.

It isn't perfect (obviously) but we have noticed a definite positive difference since adding Omega 3's and changing thier diet. Naturally there is no cure and I am finding with ASD's it goes up and down regardless of what intervention you try, but there is more ups with the diet than without, KWIM? It is a matter of keeping up with everything and then we have the best days. A regular schedule, a sensory diet, low sugar, vitamins, behavior plan, my own patience and ability to use strageties I have learned with calmness (this makes the biggest difference, lol)

As for price, I totally understand. As a matter of fact we just found out our mortgage will go up $400 a month so things are again really tight. I have been spending alot extra on food and have to be very careful again. I have found some good deals that help alot. For instance, a little way around that with the meats. I have found that if I go to an actual butcher often the meat is local and many advertise not using hormones, etc. The are about the same a regular grocery store prices. Not as cheap as say Costco huge packs, but not as expensive as the organic label.

Do you have "Foster Farms" brand where you are? I think it is local to us but not sure. They are a major producer that uses no hormones, etc. So all our chicken is foster farms.

If you have trader joe's nearby they have loads of great organic choices for the same prices as grocery chain food. Some cheaper. They have lots of kids cereals there for about $2 a box that are organic. They even have an organic no refined sugar version of poptarts that my kids LOVE as a treat for 1.99 a box. Costco and Sams Club now have organic frozen veggies and fruits. My kids love veggies and the fruit makes awesome smoothies.

Lots of people are eating more organic, as such more larger chains are trying to compete with that and the prices are thankfully coming down some. After all $5 a lb is a bit outragous for ground beef, but I get a great alternative for less than 3. I don't buy lots of crazy expensive things either. We could spend our whole budget on grceries if not careful, but a little looking and small changes do help alot.

nope, no trader joe's or Foster Farms stuff. plus my SO works at a walmart that'll shortly be having its grand opening as a Super Walmart.

I'm interested in the Omega 3. I had tried it as a treatment for my "bipolar" (long story, but I don't exactly agree with that dx, but as I'm unwilling to do psych meds, don't have much reason to try to get the "right" dx). it made me sleepy during the day & hyper at night, following the "theraputic dosage". I would like to include more fish in our diet tho.

I need to find my copy of "The out of sync child has fun"... i'd bought both books back when Finn was 3yrs, but I was overwhelmed trying to do any of the therapies at home. I would like to give it another try tho, since I can incorporate it into our homeschool
