OMG! I called for my dd's iep to be reviewed since she is only at 70% of her speech goals and they have only covered 2 of them. Well, I showed up on Thursday and when I got there I was shocked because they pulled out all the "big guns" on me. The spec ed teacher, director, principal, speech path, and this psychologist guy the district loves whom I like to gently refer to as "God's brother". He is a very confident man. I kept expecting him to pull out a mirror and look at himself since he believes himself to be so great. Anyways, it was no secret to the school that I want my dd to get ABA at school and not just at home. So the spec ed director called in "God's brother" and once it got to him after i told them what I wanted to update on her iep he looked at me and said "well aba doesn't work for everyone, especially children who have severe behavioral issues" (I don't agree with him but whatever). Anyways, the spec ed director was smirking until this guy said "however, since you daughter doesn' exhibit severe behavioral issues, aba is absolutely a perfect choice for her and she should start receiving these services immediately"!!!! I thought the spec ed director was going to ___________ right there! (you fill in the blank yourself);)

I can't believe it! God's brother totally went against what the school wanted and they are the ones that hired him! LOL Isn't that amazing!

So, he is observing her in class for 30 mins to confirm and then they have to start her class plan! OMG! I'm still reeling with unbelief like I'm going to wake up and this is all going to be a crazy dream!

OMG OMG OMG.

I am completely and TOTALLY glad that you got what you wanted in the IEP. HOWEVER, "God's Brother" is a complete idiot.

Does he NOT know that ABA means "Applied BEHAVIORAL Analysis". That it is often the treatment of choice for severe behavioral problems and used correctly can be extraordinarily effective. That a good percentage of the articles in JABA (THE scientific peer-reviewed journal for ABA) are on behavioral interventions and often severe behavioral problems.

I don't think that ABA is exclusively for kids with behavior problems but the fact that this guy said that it isn't shows he definitely DOES not understand ABA at all. He likely thinks ABA is only the discrete trials which is one teeny tiny aspect of it and not the best aspect by a long shot.

OKie dokie. Done with my rant. Though I am definitely an eclectic type of person now when it comes to therapy, my background (professional) is in ABA and I have never heard any one pull that one before.

How great!

Hey, no sense in beating them for being totally wrong about who ABA services, as long as dd is going to get it, right? ;)

YAY!!!!

Who cares if "God's Brother" (love that one, BTW) is a idiot? You got what you wanted for your DD and that's what counts.

Let us know how she does with it.
