We have decided to take a short trip to Florida in Aug because southwest has $100 RT airfare.

I know what you mean. It seems like just when I think I have Lily figured out, she changes the rules on me! By the way, that is a great deal on the airfare! Have fun on your trip!

Tina,
OMG I can so relate to that meltdown. So often we have tried to do something or plan something we think they will enjoy only to get a meltdown because it is a change in expectations. Hopefully with time and gentle cajoling he will begin to look forward to the plane flight once he gets used to the idea that this trip won't be exactly like the last.
My kids are getting better with this as they get older. Mike will often go through the whole process of verbally saying something we have taught him like cognitively processing that change is ok. We have also learned not to get our hopes up that he will be excited about something we have planned.
I am sorry it went that way. Just know that it is only because it is a change from what he expected. He had such a fun time last time it is possible his anxiety is up thinking any change will make it not fun. He will eventually get used to the change and likely will even be excited about the trip.

I am not sure if this would work for you, I have had to think fast in the past, this has worked for us (and still does), but can you tell him that there is something going on with the car and you had it checked out by a mechanic who said it wouldn't quite make the long trip to Florida? I have used that on Nick when we have taken dh's car on a road trip instead of the truck (to save gas). I then took the truck to the "mechanic" the next week and the problem ended up being a belt on the engine that was fixed!! That was much easier than trying to explain to Nick (who hates change) that it was just a change of plans. If I was going that route, while I was driving, I would ask Nick if he heard a sound, of course he said no, then say I should call the dealer and have it checked out so I put the bug into his head. Not sure if this would work for ya, but either way, have fun on your trip!
