I was told last night that the "lovely" scenic pond which was one of the reasons we liked the lot we did, has copperheads and rattlesnakes in it.

Nope no snakes in Ireland.
One word - EWWWWEEEEEEE
I HATE snakes with a passion. I am not even good with garter snakes. We had a ton of them in our yard in MA and those were not even poisonous. I refused to mow the lawn because on more than one occasion one would slither over my foot. Still gives me the shudders.
So what can you do? Is there good pest control?
Here in California Oleandar bushes keep snakes away but they are very poisonous to children. However, I am thinking they are not as poinsonous as a copper head. I know they have used them to border school grounds for rattlesnakes.
Perhaps you can fence the yard and put a row of oleandar or similar bushes behind the fence to keep them out.
Also, not sure on your area and you can check, but the rattlesnake thing actually just sounds worse than it is with our local snakes here. If a child gets bit you have like 8 hours to get them to a hospital before it starts to really affect the muscles in the area where the bite is. I think you would really have to let it go for a long time for them to get really sick or for it to be fatal. My understanding is that the spiders we have here are more poisonous.
Good luck.

OK. I would be heading for the hills, a kid in each arm, screaming for St Patrick to save me.
We visited my hippy, animal rescuing stepmother in southern Missouri a few years ago, and DH found Peter and one of the dogs happily chasing a black snake through the grass.
