OT - Foods to help gain weight (for me)

Hi gals,
Either my metabolism is kicked into overdrive or my stress level is off the charts (probably the latter). For the last 3 months I had stabilized my weight at about 131ish, which at 5'9" I was pretty happy at.

Christine,
I am hypoglycemic. I can't have ANY sugar and

Hi Christine! I can relate to what you're going through. I have spent my whole life listening to people tell me that I'm too skinny or that I'm going to blow away if a wind comes. People don't seem to realize that thin people have feelings too! I mean, I would never go up to someone who was overweight and say "Oh my gosh! You are so fat!" It was especially hard to hear the "skinny" comments when I was a teenager. Sometimes I wish I had had the guts to reply "Really? I had no idea! Thanks for letting me know that I'm thin and by the way, have you checked a mirror yourself lately? You seem to have put on a few." My mom is thin too and she used to say that she always wanted to reply "Well, that's what chemo does to people". Sadly, she ended up on chemo a few years ago because of breast cancer, but that's another subject. Alas, neither one of us ever had the nerve to make any such comments in return to others. Sorry, you've triggered a touchy subject for me. Anyhow, I have heard that the nutrition drinks, such as Ensure, can be helpful to someone who is trying to gain weight. You drink them in addition to your meals, not as replacements, to gain weight. I have a brother who tried that for awhile. I have realized since I turned 30 that my metabolism has slowed down somewhat, but not much. By, the way, I was mentioning your post to my dh and he wanted to know how you lost the weight in the past! He struggles with weight gain, so it's hard for me to plan meals that will help him lost weight, but also keep me and my dd's from losing weight. They both inherited my metabolism. Anyway, good luck with the weight gain. I personally think it's just as hard to gain weight as it is to lost it.

Hi Amy!
To be honest, to jump start the weight required a med change for my migraines. I went on a anti-seizure med called Topamax which, for me, was a appetite supressant. That got me started, but once I started losing the weight, it motivated me hugely to keep losing it the right way. The side effect of the med only lasted the first 6 months, after that, it was all me. I stopped drinking pop (the med killed my taste for it), I started eating breakfast which I never did before, I started drinking about 60-70 ounces of water a day. One of the side effects of this med is kidney stones so they recommend lots of water. I cut my dinner portions in half and stopped eating anything in the evening. I also fillup on the veggies and meat that I make for dinner, less on the potatoes or pasta, I used to eat a "snack" at around 9 pm - no more! Or if I do, it is fruit, we eat a ton of fresh fruit and veggies, good habit I am trying to develop for Nick too. I also got more active the more weight I lost, playing with Nick, outside in the yard the more weight I lost, I found I could do more. Add the stress to that, I can drop a pound in 2 days I have found now.
But I know what you mean about the comments, it is hard to know what to say when someone makes a comment not to make one back. I would rather not to hear anything at all. Tell your DH good luck, it wasnt easy to get started for me either, I hated the way I looked, but once I got started and saw, even more importantly, the way I felt, it got easier. It was nice to get off the floor from playing with Nick and have my knees not go snap, crackle and pop!

Thats interesting Christine, I read articles along time ago about dr's considering using Topamax for patients who needed to lose weight.

Thanks for the tips! I am gonna make my list and head to the grocery store. I do have a fridge at work so I can take some of the things you mentioned below and keep them to snack on during my day.

Christine,
I've been called the 2 Dementional Woman for a good deal of my life. I've had problems keeping my weight up for almost 20 years. Only recently have my drs been able to narrow the it down to a medical problem. Still don't know the reason for the problem (I make too many digestive enzymes) but at least now we have a way of dealing with it. (Eliminate enzyme addatives and enzyme reactors from my diet), and I'm slowly but surely gaining weight. I'm 147 lbs now. Still under weight for my height and bone structure, but getting there.
Not much will change for me from the weight maintanance diet I was already on. I already cooked almost everything from scratch because of Angel, now I just have to change a few small things for me.
But, to maintain 130 lbs (I'm 6' even) I had to eat 5,000cal/day minimum,
