OT-kinda-movies and ASD and thesis

Right a few weeks ago I asked you fabulous lasses to help me figure out a final project for my MLA. Well, I have decided I want to write a thesis on The Representaion (or even misrepresentation) of Autism on film. I haven't ironed out the details yet; I'm toying with separating it by decade since Kanner and Asperger released their findings, and then inclusing a chapter on movies made prior to their research that in hindsight have autistic or aspie characters, (obviously that would be very subjective.) Anyhooo, I of course have a ton of films in my head already but I wold love whatever you gals can provide also.

Mozart and the Whale, Snowcake, Rain-boring-man to name a few of course. I would also look at the recent onslaught of documentaries that have garced our screens since the '90's.

My dh is taking a class on teaching the gifted student and they showed Little Man Tate; he came out convinced the little boy and his teacher were both on the spectrum. So it doesn't have to be something that's obviously about autism that is written on the blub, but anything you can throw at me I'll gladly glean;)

Thanks again,

Dee

I just watched Stranger than Fiction. The main character, Harold Krik, is spectrumish.

How about "I am Sam"? The character Sam is described as having autistic like characteristics and delays.

I know I know more. Gotta think though on it. .....

House of Cards (for some reason this comes to mind) I know there is a whole website on autism movies as well if you do a search. Someone listed once everything they knew of even remotely close.

LOL, I can think of more TV shows and books right now, UGH.

Try that one. Lots of old movies I hadn't even heard of.

Mercury Rising (still looking. So far this is just the fiction, haven't hit on the documentaries yet)

Thanks Renee, I wanted to do a search on that one.....

What about the guy from House?... Not Movies but tv stuff that suspects their an Aspie.... Or how bout the guy from CSI Las Vegas? The bug guy, definetly Autistic traits imo....

Or the show Numbers? I only watch that occasionally but you might find an Aspie with the main Character there.... I know my father I think was an Aspie and he was into numbers and had the IQ of Einstein.... He made Straight A's at MIT....

Spellbound. It's the documentary about the kids competing in the National Spelling Bee. Or, as my DH and I like to call it, "How many aspies can you fit into one movie?"

Amy, I used to show this to my 8th grade right before spell bee season (which btw I hated, but my headmaster loved...sigh).

I always thought it was like you suggested; cram all the aspies in phonebooth, lol.

Anthony Edwards character, et al, in Revenge of The Nerds.

"Silent Bob"- Kevin Smith's character in Chasing Amy. This one could be a stretch, but I see a lot of "traits".

Brian Johnson (Anthony Michael Hall) in The Breakfast Club.

John Cusack's character in 16 Candles.

David Lightman in War Games.

Basically...Google "Nerds in movies" and see whatcha get. LOL

If you were going with TV you would have to go with boston legal as they had a whole asperger story line that was quite controversial for a bit there.

Do you want actual autism movies as in it is announced that there is an autism spectrum disorder? Or do you want our guesswork because in so many movies and books you can see autistic quirks in one of the characters, but you can find some bit of autism in almost every person and they are not neccessarily autistic.

For instance, the first that pops to mind is the main girl in Bridge to Terabitha and Luna in Harry Potter. The girl in Bridge is a loner, never had friends, dresses oddly, has an intense imaginary world (which is common amungst our aspies) but come to find out she is teh daughter of 2 authors who are free spirited. It is likely not autism as much as just her.

Luna is WAY odd (Loony Lovegood), is overly truthful about uncomfortable things, has no tact at all, dresses oddly, no social gracies and is just kind of out there like my Cait. However, look at the family again. Autism or just eccentric? No clue.

I know some GREAT novels that are about autism and such, but I am going blank on movies today.
