Right a few weeks ago I asked you fabulous lasses to help me figure out a final project for my MLA. Well, I have decided I want to write a thesis on The Representaion (or even misrepresentation) of Autism on film. I haven't ironed out the details yet; I'm toying with separating it by decade since Kanner and Asperger released their findings, and then inclusing a chapter on movies made prior to their research that in hindsight have autistic or aspie characters, (obviously that would be very subjective.) Anyhooo, I of course have a ton of films in my head already but I wold love whatever you gals can provide also.
Mozart and the Whale, Snowcake, Rain-boring-man to name a few of course. I would also look at the recent onslaught of documentaries that have garced our screens since the '90's.
My dh is taking a class on teaching the gifted student and they showed Little Man Tate; he came out convinced the little boy and his teacher were both on the spectrum. So it doesn't have to be something that's obviously about autism that is written on the blub, but anything you can throw at me I'll gladly glean;)
Thanks again,
Dee

I actually plan to combine the two; those that state autism (eg mercury rising) and others where we can see ASD traits. Yes I totally see how Leslie and Luna could be AS.My goal is to try to pick a movie or two from each decade since WWII and try to discuss how our understanding of ASD has evolved (or not) since Kanner and Asperger published their findings. Iacn find loads from the '90s and 2000's, but the earliest I can go back to is 1969 and The Wild Child. Need something from the 40's and 50's. Might need to look at biodramas on someone famous.

What about The Aviator (film about Howard Hughes). He seems to have some autistic tendancies!

My dd called me tonite to tell me about Mozart and the Whale selling at Block bluster tonite. I was reminding her that I own it.
But she said "Mom you should watch a movie that's called "The other sister" with Juliette Lewis, and Diane Keaton.
I only know that she has developmental disabilities, I have no idea if it is Autism but this is what I read on IMDB....
When Carla Tate, now a young woman, is 'graduated' out of the training school where she has resided for many years because she is mentally challenged, her hope is that she will be accepted for all that she can now do for herself. But Carla's family is wealthy which permits her mother, already blinded to her daughter's rather high-functioning abilities, to try and provide for Carla beyond her needs or desires, bringing forth the inevitable confrontations... for what Carla may lack in mental ability she certainly makes up for in her insistence on being independent, even to living in her own apartment. But if this isn't enough, into the mix comes a young man, equally challenged mentally, who moves Carla beyond anyone's control...
Shoot I forgot to add.....
I know you don't want tv shows, but tony went to toys-r-us and found an old movie that Gilligans Island did (were watching it right now lol) and doesn't everyone wonder if the "Professer" could of been an Aspie?
