Right a few weeks ago I asked you fabulous lasses to help me figure out a final project for my MLA. Well, I have decided I want to write a thesis on The Representaion (or even misrepresentation) of Autism on film. I haven't ironed out the details yet; I'm toying with separating it by decade since Kanner and Asperger released their findings, and then inclusing a chapter on movies made prior to their research that in hindsight have autistic or aspie characters, (obviously that would be very subjective.) Anyhooo, I of course have a ton of films in my head already but I wold love whatever you gals can provide also.
Mozart and the Whale, Snowcake, Rain-boring-man to name a few of course. I would also look at the recent onslaught of documentaries that have garced our screens since the '90's.
My dh is taking a class on teaching the gifted student and they showed Little Man Tate; he came out convinced the little boy and his teacher were both on the spectrum. So it doesn't have to be something that's obviously about autism that is written on the blub, but anything you can throw at me I'll gladly glean;)
Thanks again,
Dee

If you want to do a documentary from something further in the past try Rosemary Kennedy. Seems there should be SOMETHING on her.
I read about her when she passed about a year ago. It seems to me she may have been an aspie or autistic. Because she was difficult to parent, her parents agreed to the upcoming miracle treatment at the time which was a labotomy. After that Rose was severely disdabled.
It was because of Rose that her sister, Eunice, began the special olympics.

for something older what about "The Pink Panther" movies? the main character is certainly clumsy, socially awkward, obsessive, odd. Or 'Get Smart' -- tho I think those were TV.
I've been reading the Aubrey/Maturin novels by Patrick O'Brian. The movie "Master and Commander" was based on those novels. The Dr Maturin character is quite spectrum-ish in the novels, he comes off less so in the movie, but still VERY quirky in the movie. Dh and I have both been reading them and commented on how like our Weston he is.

oh oh oh, now I heard a rumor that the actor of the pink panther movies may actually be an aspie.
For older films you will likely have more luck with foriegn ones as AS and variations on the autism spectrum has been accepted in places like Europe for a lot longer than here.
