Hi gals,
Forgive me if I am a little pissed here....they actually suspended Nick for a day from school today.

You know sweetie, my first thought while reading was an aide too.
Hi Lainie,
We go in next Thursday to meet with the school for the first time, we are meeting with the teacher, principal, school psychologist and speech/language teacher.

oh my gosh! I can't believe after knowing his Dx and talking w/ you that they still suspended him! They should have had things in place before now! make sure to ask for an thorough OT evaluation for sensory needs. The OT in our preschool, kindie thru 2nd grade has lots of sensory things (swings, spinning things, trampolines, huge balls, velcro suits) for the kids to come and have sensory time so that they can return to the classroom and function.
I hope Friday is a much much better day!

Good to know!
When I began to read your post, I thought Nick was much older. But for a teacher to do this to a child in K? Ridiculous! It sounds as if she is setting him up to fail. If he is restless, she should give him an hands on/physical activity to work it off. If he figits, so what! It is his way of coping in a class of 19 kids. My son had a teacher like this in 2nd grade and called her "Mrs. Connorsitdown" since that is all she uttered all day long. She never followed his IEP and never had time to meet with me. Having him in her classroom was a big inconvenience. She worried more about how much he effected the other children than working out strategies to help him cope. Were it not for his aide, and me constantly meeting with the Principal, he would not have made it through the year.
I certainly hope your IEP meeting goes well. If he hasn't one already, be sure to have an OT eval. My son's OT was instrumental in providing supports in the classroom. I hope your is allowed an adequate amount of physical activity. Taking away recess is a definite no no! Make restricting recess off limits!
Your should have positive behavior supports in the classroom. An aide in the class would be very helpful.
Take care,
Deb
Dear sweet Jasus,
That teacher needs a crash course in how to discipline. Her use of the cell phone is betond inappropriate, and to suspend a kindergardner for reacting to being teased when he has a friggin' disability....arrgh. It's obvioous the principal and the idiot teacher have no clue about autism and are perfectly happy to blame the child and not recognize their own failure in making Nick feel safe and supported.
This reminds me of Liam's kindy year...we are still playing academic catch up from that let me tell you. Noone wante to acknowledge any of Liam's issues either. (((hugs))) At the meeting perhaps you could bring a copy of his eval withe various dx, maybe if they se it on paper it'll broaden their own world a bit.

I agree with Dee. I'd be angry too.
I agree about the cell phone call, talk about embarassment in front of the class...I have somewhere she could put her cell phone.....
But it gets better...check out my newest post.

Girl you got me FUMMING over here for you.
How DARE THEY SUSPEND HIM. He's only 5 for crying ouy loud. Granted the "no tolerence" policy in place BUT he has autism..........hello!!!!!!!!!!
I think Nick should have an aide to shadow him and keep him on track and to help with his anxious (sp?) behaviors. For that b*tch of a teacher to humiliate him via the cell phone call.......well that needs to

I understand you well..especially since I'm still steaming from my son's incident, written in another post. Sounds like for a lot us this week is plan crappy.
I wish I could give some great advice but my mind is so exhausted from todays ordeal and have such a headache. Hopefully you'll be able to get an IEP in place. It will help.
