Our Holiday Update-Sorry, It's Long!

All in all, things went really well...as far as the kids are concerned. :-) We went to my mom's house last Thursday and returned yesterday (Tuesday). Everybody did a fabulous job "keeping it together" and there were no major meltdowns. Currently Noah and Emma are playing on the Wii...but that's only because DH and I finally decided to give it up.
Mom and I did our share of b*tching at each other. I know better. She's 72, and I need to learn to let things go. But I was in an angry mood all weekend (thanks to my inlaws) and just wasn't smart enough to keep my trap shut.
Poor DH worked his rear-end off the entire trip. It was the first real vacation he's taken since we moved here, but he didn't get a minute to relax. You see, we do our best to make it appear as if her house hasn't been invaded by our family of 5 (6 if you count the dog). So we're in a constant state of picking up after the kids, doing dishes, helping mom clean her house, etc. Christmas morning the kids work up at 7:30, gifts were unwrapped by 9:15, and we spent the next 2 hours trying to "hide" all the gifts away, before the rest of the family (there are 35+ people in my immediate family) showed up. It's not fair to the kids...but it helps keep the peace. DH also ended up doing half of the cooking Christmas day.
The low point of the trip came when my meth. addicted neice called on Christmas morning and proceeded to tell my "attends mass every day of the week" mother that she aborted the twins she was carrying. Later that night she showed up and claimed she's getting herself straightened out, but it doesn't take a genius to tell she's a worthless liar. After she left I had to explain to mom the pyschology behind someone saying your name over and over again as they're lying to your face. (If that girl said "grandma" once she said it 1,000 times over the course of the hour and a half she was in the house.)
Needless to say, I'm glad the majority of the season is over. We still have to do Christmas with DH's family on New Years Day. I'd rather have a root canal than endure an afternoon with them. Oh, and the best part...MIL had the nerve to request DH make the cheese soup for that day. Granted, she's not the best cook...but who can screw up cheese soup? The reality is, she's lazy...completely and totally lazy. I had to do the shopping for her, and now she expects DH to do the cooking. Reason number 9,721 why I can't wait to get the flip out of this town!
Sorry for the novel, ladies...guess I needed to vent and didn't realize it!

So sorry, sometimes it isn't our kids that make the holidays rough is it. I am glad they did well and had a nice time. But sometimes family can just be difficult to deal with.
So sorry about the meth addicted neice. You know how much that news saddens me for those wee ones. It is also horrible to hear about her killing herself with drugs. My friends sister recently went into a hospice and wasn't expected to live due to drugs and alcohol (killed her liver). She is doing slightly better now (forced abstinence from drugs) but it won't last forever. It is just so sad to see how it affects them and everyone else around them.
I hope that new years eve pleasantly surprises you. OR you could come here. I am just having some other friends over with "different" children like ours. We celebrate east coast new years, ie 9pm our time.

Oh Renee...I did have two really important gifts under the tree.
1. Drunkard's Prayer
2. iPod car adapter
:-)
Amy
DANG! I got an iPod car adapter too! And an iGadget software program we still can't figure out. Oh and a new guitar, lol. (would have rather had my old one fixed but this is good. The whole family is getting into it)
