Tonight the paper is interviewing members of our autism support group. I'm at a loss for what to say. The paper lady said write down what we want people to know and she'll ask us questions based on that. Anyone want to tell me what you want people to know ;) I don't want to be in the paper. I'm too shy!!!

I think in the place that I am at right now I would want people to know that what most people think of when they hear autism isnt the case.

Hi Samantha,

I guess if I had the opportunity, I would want people to know the early signs that we all know and not to listen to pediatricians who say "wait and see," "boys talk later" etc. Just about every single person I know with a kid on the spectrum was told something like this. My ped even told us "wait until he is 3" well, if we had done that we would have missed out on early intervention! People should also know that early intervention exists and that it can really help.

I agree people need to also know that the stereotype of the classic Kanner's ASD child is just one manifestation of ASD. I also think people should try to be a bit more tolerant in public "meltdown" situations and realize things are not always as they appear.

Good luck with the interview, let us know how it goes!

I think Tina and Katherine had great points. If I hadn't continued to ask why my son was behaving the way he was I think it would have been many years until somone else would have noticed. The bad behavior in public is definetly something people wouldn't assume was my bad parenting but I have to admit I was guilty of thinking the same thing before my kids were diagnosed.Good luck with the interview, I'm sure you'll do great. It's a wonderful opportunity to make other people aware our kids and how brave they really are.

thanks everyone. She interviewed us as a group and took a picture of all the kids. OMG, you should have seen that. Trying to line 5 ASD kids on a couch togeather and get them all to smile for a picture. What a hoot! I think we overwhelmed the poor woman. One thing she said that we all thought was great was, "But you are all so calm". One Mom said oh yea, we're all sedated! She was just kidding of course. We gave her a lot of infomation and we touched on all of your suggestions and more. I'm really glad we did it. The paper lady said she's let us all read it before it goes to print and any of us could make changes. I can't wait to read it.
