Paula's post got me thinking.

Do patients on Trileptal need to have regular blood tests?

Yep. They tested me after I started to make sure my carbamazapine (sp) levels were OK. They have tested my levels

Hi,

My son has been on trileptal for a few years now. Trileptal is very close to depakote, but a tad different. Depakote you definately need labs done for regularly because it can affect the liver. Trileptal you do not. That is what makes it so wonderful and why I asked for it instead of depakote. We use it for mood stabilization. However, if you were to need it for EEG reasons, trileptal may not be as good because you can't test for a theraputic level which you are looking for with in those cases. (Correct me if I'm wrong moms with more experience in that realm).

So, hence bloodwork is not needed with trileptal. Sodium levels can drop in rare cases, but i just let my son have all the salty pickles he wants which he eats daily.

I think Val is right. They don't generally need to test it because it doesn't mess with your liver.

But for *me*, ya know, the girl who gets the 1 in 18,000 illness, with the <1% cause of *that* illness and who will get the rare dangerous side effect of a generally safe drug; they are starting to learn
