You have my sympathy. We used to have big problems with this until we put some rules in place. One was that Euan got to write his list and we told him which things we and his siblings were getting him, so he wasn't worried by the surprise, or that it wouldn't be right. Second one was that he had to wait until his birthday for them, but he was allowed to open them first thing. third one was that he had to write thank you letters for all the gifts he got from other relatives and friends, even if they were the 'wrong' thing or he didn't like them. He loves rules and certainty more than he loves surprises or lots of money being spent on him, and the rules remove a lot of stress for me too.
