Is Pointing the answer?

hi Everyone,
We (I) have been watching my 13 and 1/2 month old son since he was born. His sister has PDD-NOS and our oldest child is not on the spectrum but has speech and sensory issues. Anyway, my pediatrician feels that the ability to point at around 18 months is the only true and proven indicator of a child developing autism. He says that typically developing children do not usually lose the ability to point. So, since my son does point occasionally - do I no longer have to worry? My son does point sometimes, he will turn his head toward something when I ask where it is, he does turn his head when I call his name, although more and more it seems to take longer since he always seems to be into something, he babbles, he likes to play peek a boo - he's pretty on target with fine and gross motor skills. on the worrysome side, he doesnt same mama, he doesnt point all the time to something, he does seem infatuated with pushing the buttons on the DVD/VCR, the computer, the electrical outlets and taking everything out of cabinets. The other worrisome thing is that his head circumference is about 95th percentile. I have been a wreck since this child was in the womb - I am watching him like a hawk an I would be interesting in hearing any thoughts that some of you might have being that I am a firm believer that experience speaks so much louder that textbook info.
Thanks!
Julie

I never heard the pointing thing.
Hiya Julie,
Welcome to the board!
I agree with Evelyn...there is no "definitive" answer to whether a child has autism or not.
