potty training methods?

So I'm thinking that over Februrary break, I'm going to try to switch Sylvia over to underwear and see how it goes. I have a feeling that she's ready, but I think she needs a bit of a push. We had actually planned on trying this out a while ago, but she hadn't yet used the potty at school (was afraid to) and so her teacher was -- rightly so -- very reluctant to get rid of the pullups! But now she's regularly sitting on the potty at school, and I'd really like to see if she can do it (she turned 4 in December).

Anyway, the dev ped who diangosed her back in November gave me a booklet on using the TEACCH method to potty train. I've also read the book "When Babies Read," which discusses a method very similar to the TEACCH method but using words instead of pictures (since it's geared toward hyperlexic kids). I was thinking of using a hybrid method, with both words and pictures. But I was curious: have any of you tried the TEACCH method for potty training? Sylvie sits on the potty regularly and appears to know what to do on it; she just doesn't indicate to me when she has to go. So if I can catch her and get her on the potty at the right time, she'll stay dry all day (except that never happens, of course). The TEACCH method seems to be a good way to "train" the child to indicate when they need to use the bathroom, but I'd love some feedback from someone who's tried it...

Or, has anyone tried a different method? Any pointers? I just feel like we're at the point now where if we don't try to teach her how to do this, she's not going to just learn it by herself, you know?

Anyway, any help would be MUCH appreciated!!!

Bobby will be 4 in April and we have finally been able to make some progress with potty training over christmas break.

I have to admit being terrified to do the bare bottomed thing, even though many people have told me it works. My feeling is, if she does have an accident, I want a couple of layers of clothing there to start soaking it up, LOL! ;-) But besides that, Sylvie does have some sensory issues and I don't think she'd go for the bare bottomed thing. She either likes being totally naked or else totally clothed, and the totally naked thing would be difficult in January (we have some old picture windows that are VERY drafty).

I'm glad to hear it's going so well for Bobby, though, in spite of some accidents. Any success story is encouraging. I'm starting to feel a little frustrated and I don't want to go into our "underwear week" feeling frustrated, since I know that will only make things worse. If you have any other tips for me, let me know!!! Do you just ask him if he has to go all the time? If he says no, do you just wait and ask him again a little bit later? Sometimes Sylvie will just keep saying no and so I have to enforce a potty break... do you have that problem, too?

Hi,

My DS was just turning 4 when he learned the potty (well, just the pee part!)

How we did it was putting him on the potty ALL THE TIME, every 1/2 hour or so.

Now, at 4.5, he'll go himself and put his underwear back on (OK, normally backwards). He has big sensory issues too (under-responding) so I honestly thought he didn't know when he needed to go.... or didn't care if he wet himself.

My eldest child (a girl) I used cloth diapers on. You might try that -- those kids train earlier. Because they can FEEL the wetness yet you don't have a mess!
