I had started Jake using the potty a while ago but kind of got side tracked with our house going up for sale and having a million people coming and going through here over the last couple of weeks and ended up going back to diapers. I have decided to start training again first thing tomorrow. I have come to the conclusion that pull ups are a complete waste of time for Jake because he just sees it like a diaper and holds his pee until he has one on. I don't think he gets the reason he's sitting on the potty either and just sees it almost like a seat he sits on while watching TV or reading a book. I think this time round I'm just going to go straight to training him on a seat on the toilet. Do you think this is a mistake? I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or things that worked for them to keep the child busy in the bathroom. Did you use any visuals or timers etc.? Thanks and wish me luck!

Hi Stacey,

I saw a padded seat that has handles on it. I think it was at either Target or Walmart. Babies R Us has some potty stuff too. The seat was white but the handles were blue. No faces. I know it exists! Hope your DH is more sympathetic now too.

Thanks everyone! It's only 12.30 and we already had 2 accidents but I am determined to stick with it this time and to keep my patience. What did Georges dad from seinfeld say? Oh yeah... SERENITY NOW (LOL)Katherine I have that potty seat you were telling Stacey about. You are right it's a white cushioned seat with blue handles and I got it at Walmart.

I had written these war stories here before, but ds basically just out-and-out refused to learn until he was 4 and a half. And that means almost 2 years of trying, although we would back off for periods of time once it had been gotten through our thick skulls that he was NOT going to even try. His attitude was "Why? What for? This diaper deal is good for me, what's YOUR problem?"

Potty video tapes, rewards, picture schedules, special needs preschool where other boys were starting ahead of him, little potty, big potty with chair seat, dolls with pottys and bottles of water that would wet - he got a kick out of them... We did try one week of sending him to school in cloth underpants, which he wet over and over and was getting depressed. So we stopped that.

And my funniest part of the story was that somewhere around 4 years old, as we are applying to kindegartens and getting nervous about college in diapers, he TELLS me that he plans on using the potty when he turns 6 YEARS OLD!!! And not before then!!!

Then he pulled the timeline back to 5, then at 4 and a half, without even once having TRIED to use it, well, he got it all together and everything at once, No. 1, No. 2, dry through the night, no accidents, at school, out at public restrooms, in the little potty if it happened to be closer and in the regular potty.

Typical of my boy, who always studies all the angles until he is sure he is ready and has ALL the details in place, then does it right.

Oooohhhhh I remember the potty training days with Vaughn......awful, awful, awful. My sister-in-laws had to brag everytime I was still changing his diapers (he was almost 4 before he learned) about how early their children potty trained....I believe the earliest was 18 months......I'm sure you could visibly see the steam coming out of my ears at those times.

Like Sara......we did the books, tapes, videos, charts, stickers, bribs - you name it, I tried it. My mom kept telling me that he would go when he was ready and he did. During his potty-training days, I was a single mom and working full time so his daycare provider (a pure angel on earth) and I started on the routine of putting him on the toilet once every hour - we were more trained than he was....LOL! It eventually worked. Vaughn has always learned in step progression (still does).......it takes him a while to learn something but once he does, he's got it.

I know I always hated to hear the following.......it will happen, in his own time......but it is true.

Good luck,

Christie - who is not looking forward to potty training #2 son - he is almost 2 yrs old
