Prenatal Testing Question
| Fri, 01-05-2007 - 10:10pm |
Hi ladies, I wanted to ask you if any of you had prenatal testing done. I mean like the triple screen, CVS, amino?
I understand they carry a higher rate of miscarriage. I didn't have one done with my DS
I understand that these tests can't detect AS
Just a nervous new mom to be
I am on the fence about this kind of thing, I'm only 32.
There is no other documented genetic disorder in the family, just my DS with PDD
Had DS tested for Fragile X and other tests ordered at his original dx. All came back normal or negative.
Thanks

Nope.
Nope. I refused everything that wasn't an ultrasound. I had to have way more ultrasounds than normal with Mark because something in his head measured larger than it should have, so the docs asked multiple times if I wanted to do an amnio.
I didn't want one.
I suppose I just figured I'd rather deal with something being wrong *if* it was wrong than deal with a lot of worry and anxiety over a test finding that something that could be wrong.
I also didn't want to risk anything happening to the baby.
The odd thing is that Glen and I never discussed it, but he never questioned my decision to refuse the testing. I guess he agreed with me.
Everything was fine with Mark's head, btw.
Ditto,
I had extra ultrasounds with Dave because something appeared to be amiss in his usual ultrasound. With that extra testing so came genetic counselling. Dave had some features of a "chromosome abnormality" in utero (like downs or something). We ended up beign determined to have a 1/100 chance of a child with downs vs. the usual whatever it is. He did end up being born with a hole in his heart which spontaneously closed in about a day and had a heart murmur. He also has a very abnormal EEG, a number of quirks and is incredibly bright and precocious. So the tests really told us nothing. I didn't have the CVS or any of those though they were offered.
When I was pregnant with Dave I knew I had 2 children with special needs already but I also chose not to have many of those tests because the outcome wouldn't change anything.
The only reason we had the extra tests for something with the heart was so we could plan for any care neccessary at birth or before if there was something wrong.

No...I didn't have any tests done. I am of the same opinion as Debbie. Nothing that the tests could've shown would've made a difference for us.
Amy
who had to edit this post because she's an idiot who thought you said that these test "could detect AS" sorry

Thank you ladies,
I won't test then. I didn't do it with my ds. I wanted him so badly, I didn't want to risk anything to happen to him.
Besides, I've weathered a few storms, I'll be able to handel it.
Much Thanks
Nora

ITA with you. I declined all testing when I was pregnant b/c of all the same reasons you had.

Neither of my boys are dx'ed, although I'm working on getting Henry a dx.
So far, Mark seems NT.
I did do the first test, just cuz my doc talked me into it, but I knew if there were any problems, I wouldn't do the amo, because of all the research I did on false positives, and on problems with miscarriage and such. And I knew I would deal with anything that came my way.
Luckily it was fine, but I know of a friend that did get a false positive, get an amo and still worried....
I just read an article the other day, that they have better testing out there for these type of things, that are less evasive, and more accurate than the false positive test. And its not like the amo, were it carry's risks to the babie. I also read that they are now screening all woman, not just the ones that are over 35.
