Dee,

I wish I could be of more help. My brother lives in the atlanta area. My nephew has been in special ed since he was about 1st grade or so. He is now a junior in high school. As far as I know they have been pleased but I also know my SIL is really up on things and fights for what he needs.

Unfortunately, I haven't gotten to talk with them too much on how they like thier district and my nephew has Mild CP adn LD's but no ASD. I do know it seems like he was getting a good program. There was even an article in the paper about him when he was in 6th grade because he used a alphasmart and it was a nice positive article.

Good luck in your search.

They live about an hour north of atlanta too.

Dee,

I went through this a few months ago, (well, almost. I lost my job and the need to relocate!) and I found that is is very tough to get info on special ed for a district/county. Regular ed information is easy, but good regular ed does not always mean good specal ed.

Also, you may need to drill down to specifics for *your* situation. As an example: My SD is great for special ed except for ONE thing: they don't provide home based ABA. Period. So although for most people my district might be ideal, there's no way Jackie would want to move here with her three boys.

So decide your priorities for now and the future: (EI, special ed preschool, transportation, ASD classes in district -whatever you feel is important for you), and decide where your compromise points are. Also if you need regular ed as well as special services, you have to look at that too. I had thought I had found the perfect district for Peter, hen found out their regular ed was at the bottom of the league -so Siobhan would have been short-changed. (had to start all over again)

Try to find parent resources locally who may be able to help you. If there are local chapters of ASA or CHADD, they may be able to help you find local esources. Sometimes there are parent networks or not-for profit agencies just for this sort of thing.

Also can look on the internet for the state/ regional special ed resources. There may be something like the NYVESID site locally. -a work of caution; government agencies CANNOT advise you to choose one district/region over another for any particular case, but private or parent agencies can.

Now is a good time to start calling districts, beacause it is a relatively quiet time in the special ed world. After Christmas, it all goes haywire, and you won't be able to get a hauld of any SpEd director for love or money.

Good luck.

-Paula.
