Question about medications

We met with our pediatrician this week to discuss treatments for our 5 yr old recently diagnosed with Aspergers. We decided not to the GFCF diet. We are putting him on a multi vitamin and initiating play therapy and occupational therapy. He starts kindergarten in the fall and will be in a self contained ESE classroom. We are really happy with the program. But of course, change is very difficult for him and it takes a long time to adjust. We are considering medication. We considered it a few months ago when he was having such a hard time adjusting to ESE Pre-k but he settled in finally and did a lot better. Our Dr talked to us about Tennex and Clonidine. They are blood pressure meds but can help with Aspy kids who are a little prone to hyper activity, aggression, etc. He doesn't like to give them SSRI's-which I don't want him on any way. He says depending on the child's ability to concentrate and focus, he may pair the Clonidine with a stimulant. We aren't sure if we'll do meds at all. I thought it might be good just while he's adjusting to kindergarten to make that easier. DH prefer's to wait and see how he does. He's probably right. I prefer him to not have meds if they are not REALLY needed. I feel much better about him taking the Tenex or Clonodine to the stimulants or SSRI's. These don't have the really bad impact when you take them off. They seem less invasive to me.
Has anyone tried these meds? What was your experience?
Thanks,
Melissa

Well Melissa, I don't have any experience with meds, but I have to say I think you are on the right track with starting therapies first.
ITA with ya. We will only use it if needed. His adjustment to the ESE Pre-k was real hard and I don't want kindergarten to be the same way. But we will only use it if absolutely necessary.
Thanks,
Melissa
