Quick Question

My ds (7) is in 2nd grade. He is on a beginning 1st grade reading level. He is making minimal progress. He does not retain any of the words. His IQ level is 130+ so you think he would at least retain some of it through osmosis....
Any advice?
TIA,
Jennifer

Jennifer,
Welcome to the board.
Jennifer,
He could do what my son did: One summer, reading just seemed to 'click' with him, and we haven't looked back.
But to be on the safe side: I

2 thoughts.
1) have his vision tested for developmental vision problems (not typical "eyesight") but rather developmental vision like convergence. This takes a specialist. You will have to research it.
2) LIndamood-Bell - fabulous reading program. Available in many districts but if not I believe there is a home program that can be done. I would look into it in the school though.
3) Eval through a reading specialist as to why he is that far behind.

The teachers are concerned, I am in almost daily contact with them. He gets 4 hours of resource (1:1)and 1 hour of tutoring (in class)a week. We have had Several meetings with the teachers, they just say he is behind...they don't really say why or how come. Can they? (he even participated in a summer reading program and in the fall was at a lower level.)
I do think something is wrong...he cannot "retain" I don't know what to do at this point....
hmmmmm
thanks,
jennifer
Thanks, your ds reassures me, but who exactly (if you know) would I schedule an appointment with?
Thanks
Jennifer
Thank you for the information....I am going to start searching the net for convergence and LIndamood-Bell and I will be on the phone Monday with his school!
Have you had good results (or know of) with the Lindamood?
Thanks again,
Jennifer
Yes, I know of loads of good results from LMB. It is highly recomended.
1) Our new superintendent has made it a priority in the district. In her last district they made drastic improvements in reading scores due to LMB. Currently most of the districts have school based LMB centers which is really good as far as districts go. I think it will really help our entire district.
2) On a personal level, my friends DS was going into 5th grade with a K reading level. The kid half the time couldn't remember his letters. 1.5 years of lindamood-bell later and I believe he is up to like a 3rd grade reading level in 6th grade (perhaps higher). I observed his class (Special day) recently and they were learnign to read some really tough grade level words. This guy was the top in his class on that activity shouting out answers to words like frustrated, communication, etc.
3) My ds's SDC teacher uses it in her day class with kids who's reading has been far behind. This is her 2nd year using it and she really speaks highly of it.
There are a number of different "levels'" to it. 2 that I know of for sure. One is the phonetic awareness piece and your basic reading, then the other is reading comprehension which they do through what they call "Visualize-Verbalize" approach. I saw a demonstration of this in my ds's 5th grade mainstream class the other day and I was impressed.

I will see if I can find you some links on the vision processing stuff. My dd was behind on her reading and her teacher caught this. It was like the words danced around on the pages or she was seeing double. We did a bunch of exercises and some tutoring and she caught up quickly once we did that. It was a matter of finding out what the trouble was.

I'm not sure who woudl be the best person, to be honest. I would imagine soem sort of reading specialist. I don't know if your school district has such a beast.
