Quirks

My autistic son has many quirks. There are two that really stand out in my mind.

He likes for other people to hug me (especially my older son).
I am sometimes lucky enough to get a hug from the little guy. Mostly, he wants other people to hug me and for me to hug other people.

Another little quirk he has is with sandwiches. When I make a sandwich, I cut it in half and give it to him. He will eat the crust of the half that sets on the left side, but will not eat the crust on the half that sets on the right.

LOL! That's funny about the crust. Mine does stuff like that too. The one thing that comes to mind first is that he HAS to put on his shoes while sitting right in the doorway. We go out the back door, which is a sliding glass door. While he's putting on shoes, other people would sometimes like to be able to go out the door, but if you open the door, he CAN'T put on his shoes, because of the "cold air". Okay, first of all, we're in California, so it's not exactly a blizzard rushing in. And he won't put on his jacket, because that is something he HAS to do AFTER he puts on his shoes. I now realize that it really has nothing to do with the cold. The issue really is that he's gotten stuck into one of these routines that are very common among kids on the autistic spectrum. He has a very precise routine for the whole "getting ready to go out" thing, and some of the things in that routine are kind of weird.

You're definately not alone!
