So I have question about receptive language. Did your children show any signs of receptive delay when they were younger? Gabe has a severe to moderate receptive language delay as well as expressive. I only ask because someone told me he can't have that delay and also be autistic. Just curious.

Who told you that? Isn't receptive language the same as Auditory processing disorder???? Which many of our kids have?

Now I know there's some on that other board we go to Jessie that just have APD along with Dyslexia, ADHD etc. But almost most of our ASD kids have this too.

The therapist that just did Gabe's eval said his receptive language won't improve until his sensory issues are under control...and if I remember correctly CAPD can be caused by sensory issues.

It seems to me when am kid has one neuro issue they are bound to have other issues as well. At least mine does :-)

That comment is specifically on the speech/language board on ivillage. There is a lady on there with a child that has MERLD...and she said Gabe can't have both....I'm not saying she's wrong...but I am just trying to understand my son better.

Anyway, i wanted to ask you guys to see what others had to say. The topic that discussion is under is jargon/jibberish...or something like that.

Thank you. That makes complete sense. For a minute I thought maybe Gabe was the exception to the rule. His language issues are severe...but he also displays many red flags for autism and meets the DSM criteria for an autism dx.

I am not always the best at explaining those things....you explained it rather well.

The way the poster replied to me made me feel as if I wrong about autism and language disorder. At least I know my son is part of the norm not the exception.

Jessie, I went over and read the thread that you are talking about including the DSM-IV bit about MERLD.
