Could you tell me more about Cait's hand stim. I was alarmed to hear a stim could mess up developement. Kyle is frequently holding his hands a certain way. I'm not sure I can describe it. I'd hate to think of his hands getting any worse than they already are. KWIM

I can't find a picture of it drat. It is hard to explain. But I guess the problem for her is that she is double jointed and she is often moving her thumb in such a was that it is hyperextended. Usually she is rubbing her fingers but she holds them together in odd ways too, or she twists them tight. But she likes to pop the second knuckle on her thumb (closer to the wrist) in and out and hold it in such a way that it is overextended. My understanding is that this part is the problem.
She is very thin and has long thin hands that are "double jointed" or in other words are too flexible/hyperextend easily. I didn't know that could be a problem either. It is definitely a sensory seeking stress related thing. She isn't doing it at all today becasue I gave her a mental health day off, lol.
Here is the closest picture I can see. It appears she is doing it with the hand that is holding her chin. Hard to tell from this angle though. But the way her hand looks I think so. http://tinyurl.com/mjxfu

I can't seem to access the picture but thank you for your reply. Kyle isn't double jointed. I wouldn't say he's too flexible either. He crosses his fingers, but not the first and second fingers like most people do. He crosses his ring finger and middle finger. Then he sort of holds him arms back and turns his hands back. Kyle is definately a sensory avoider when it comes to his hands. He tried not to touch anything. That definately let to the small motor skills problems.
Good luck with OT

I did fix the picture so you can see but it definitely sounds different.
She will sometimes cross her fingers too. She likes to do all of them at the same time but it isn't as much as the way she holds her fingers in or pops her thumb back and forth.
