Thanks for thinking of me.
Well she seems to have enjoyed her day which is important. She even mentioned making a little friend who likes horses and 2 kids from her old school are in her class. Both of which I know are ADHD so these teachers must be the ones they put all those type of kids with. The teachers (mainstream) seem really nice and into parent involvement as per their parent letters anyway.
She told me she ate lunch with one of the boys in her asperger's class. I guess that he is in 6th too and in all her academic classes as well, plus he takes the bus with her. hmmm, I have to meet this boy, lol. She ate with a girl she went to school with last year too. This isn't the neighborhood school, but the neighborhood school failed to meet standards mandated in NCLB so there are about 10-20 kids from her school last year that are going to her school this year.
On the down side I am a bit perterbed at the AS teacher. Maybe I am being sensitive but on the first day I typically expect some sort of welcome letter. Some thing that tells you what the kids will be doing for the year, the expectations, etc. Nothing. The first day of orientation Cait was crying and the teacher knew it. I was hoping for some sort of update or little note from her as to how today went. Nothing. No correspondence from her what so ever. Not a great first impression. Of ALL the other teachers I am dealing with this year, ALL of them have sent home welcome letters, information, etc. Including Mike's SDC teacher I had last year, Emily, David and Cait's 2 mainstream teachers.
Cait's 2 academic teachers sent home lots of info, thier email addresses, volunteer signup sheets, work the kids did the first day and the kids started setting up thier sections of their binder. Nada from the AS teacher.
Why I am REALLY annoyed is because one of those AS classes is specfically for organizational and study skills. I had left her binder and such pretty blank and didn't set it up "my" way cause I figured the teacher had a method she wanted them to use. Nothing mentioned about it at all. So tonight I went through and set her binder up for her in a way I know will work for her and it better be ok with the teacher.
I am SORRY but kids with AS and severe organizational issues need that set up from the get go for them so they don't get overwhelmed. That should have been the first thing she did. Nope today they played a game and had cake for one boys birthday. That is all Cait was able to tell me about social skills class.
Ok so long answer shortened, Cait had a great first day but I know it won't last without lots of support and I was more than underwhelmed at what I have seen for support thus far. I have been told by numerous people how great this teacher is. I have met her and was told all these lovely things by her. But so far, I am not seeing it in action, KWIM?
Thanks for asking.
On other notes, all 3 of the other kids had excellent first days. Dave's teacher even pulled me aside to tell me what a polite, nice, kind young man he was and she gave him a hug. I think he is working on being teachers pet, lol. We'll see if that lasts but he is a sweetie. When he is good he is really really good and when he is bad....well you know.
