Renee, hygiene?

Renee,
Did you find something to help Cait with the hygiene stuff? We are in need of the same stuff for Kyle. We did some picture schedules in the past but they went to the wayside for some reason. Kyle is feeling picked on because we have to stand over him when he's in the shower and getting ready for bed at night. With his age its getting embarrasing for all parties. We need to find a way for him to do it on his own. Let me know if you've got something that works.
Thanks,
Samantha

Yeah,
I am a lucky girl. DH works in the field and has many neat things available at home to use for work. One is a boardmaker program and he recently was able to get an upgrade that has given me some ideas.
They are picture schedules again. But I think I could even write schedules. I am going to laminate them (with the stuff you buy at staples) and hang them in the shower. I have the face washing one to put in the bathroom cabinet right beside her face washing stuff. I am also going to make an activity schedule with pictures so she doesn't forget things like deodorant. We have a routine for years that includes brushing teeth and hair, etc, but now that she is in puberty it needs to go beyond that.
Some of the tips we use so far may help you.
I have each childs toiletries in thier own "bucket" in the bathroom. In it has all the personal stuff they need for freshening up. Toothbrush, thier own tooth paste, hair brush, deordorant, etc. I didn't have room for Cait's face stuff in her bucket so it has it's own shelf with a picture schedule next to it. I bought face wipes for her, lotion and pimple cream. I did the wipes because it is easier to manage than the wet face clothes when your motor skills rot. Then in the shower she has her own shelf with her shampoo and conditioner (the kid one doesn't work for her anymore)
Next, I am going to put a picture schedule either on Cait's bucket or near it that includes wash face, brush hair, brush teeth, deodorant.
I am also going to post in the bathroom specfic checklists (called task analysis) for washing her hair and her body. I can send you copies of those but it literally breaks down the steps to wash your left arm, wash your right arm, etc. If they can manage better you can put "wash your arms, wash under your arms, etc". In this way if it is the same everytime they learn it as a routine and it sticks. For some reason they just don't naturally get the whole concept of washing thier whole body. For hair washing I have to list to wash it 2 times. She has such thick hair and lousy fine motor on this stuff that it never gets clean in one wash.
I can really see the difference with Emily in this. When I taught her once to wash herself and her hair, the concept stuck and she gets it and can do it herself. i just have to check to make sure she does. And she can just tell if she is extra dirty and needs to wash harder, etc.
Mike is great with routines. He needed to learn a routine, but once I taught him it is ingrained permanently. So I had to teach the same routine but he doesn't need the constant visual reminder. He would never leave the shower without washing his hair, where as Cait could just stand in the water, turn it off and get out without doing anything. She will just have completely flaked what she was supposed to do in there.
email me if you want more specific stuff

LOL, that is exactly what Kyle does. I have to go take my state board for limited radiograpy right now but I'll probably email you later. Wish me luck. I need it. I have a migraine from stressing about everything going on with Kyle right now.

Same here,
We can complain about Migraines together. I am pretty stressed about Cait. She is more the oppositional type than explosive which is good, but last year in the beginning was horrific for me with Mike. I understand where you are at. Most of last year was really tough for Cait but it was more a slow build and constant issues to deal with. She is regressing this year and that only happens under extreme stress. I just emailed her teacher AGAIN, but today I am calling regional center and going to see if I can get the ed consultant put back on her plan so I can have eyes on the inside.
I am finding upper elementary/middle school to be very stressful.

..Renee this is what Jake does too...

He is way to old for me to stand in there with him and it is hard to see what ihe is doing under the door! LOL
