Resources in New York State?
| Tue, 10-17-2006 - 3:09am |
We are considering relocating to Rochester from Ontario. We have a 6 year old with a diagnosis of PDD-NOS. He has been in and continues to need ABA-type supported inclusion.
Does anyone out there know if New York State subsidizes this kind of ABA and/or classroom support? Are there waiting lists? My son will be in a private (religious) school, which might make a difference.
We just want to make sure that we aren't moving from a bad support situation to one that is even worse! Ontario has some fine support programs, but with waiting lists of several years in length, so we ended up paying for everything ourselves (ouch).
Thank you for any information you can share!

I just so happen to live in Rochester! Rochester has wonderful resources for children on the spectrum. We have great ABA programs and DIR as well. We use a DIR program but I know that we also have a lot of ABA too.
A great contact number would be Jill Averill at the Kirch Center (585) 275-6605. Her email would probably be jill_averill@urmc.rochester.edu. Your child would get an IEP that would be covered by the school district. Keep in touch with me, as the school district that you move into also makes some difference as to how easy it is for you to get the program approved that you want.
Honestly, compared to the others on the board, Rochester offers so much that I would never move if I could help it. It's a bit different in school age vs. preschool where we are currently, but it is still really good. You could also contact UNYFEAT.org, a local group that could answer questions about local services for you. There are school aged moms in that group.
Feel free to email me at vjacobs at frontiernet dot net. Good luck! Valerie

Valerie, thank you so much for this information. I am pleased to hear your assessment of the Rochester situation.
I may well be in touch in the future, if this relocation possibility becomes more real.
Best wishes,
