Results so far with the NP

Yesterday I sat down with my son's NP to discuss some of his test results so far. Their are two things he is being tested for. Dysgraphia and Aspergers.
So far he has found the Dysgraphia. He scored way low on the scale for Visual Processing, and Written Expression. There's enough there for the NP to write up a report to send to the school. I'm am so happy, this has been a 3 yr battle with the school system who kept insisting that nothing was wrong, that he was a very capable child, and he could do the work. He did have assesment in 2nd grade and the only thing he got services for at that time was speech therapy.
The doctor said that he does have Asperger "Traits" but didn't dx him. I told him that labels do not matter to me, but they do when it comes to the school because I know he will get more help. Then I went on to tell him of two main behaviors my son has been displaying that really concern me, that I didn't tell him about before.
I told him about when Chris Stiffens his body and bumps me when he's upset, I told him about when he trantrums he starts throwing things, slapping and pushing. I also told him about the "faces" he makes. He will roll his eyes up in the back of his head, his eyelids flutter, and he pinches his lips. I told him I can't tell if these are stims, or maybe seisuze's.
The doctor immediatly said okay, I need to do some more testing here. He said he only knows what he has observed with Chris so far and what I have told him to base his decision on.
He asked me to go home and ask chris if he remembers these things happening to him. Chris had just had a trantrum yesterday morning. I told the doctor that during his trantrum he was fully awake, but he said "But he could of just "looked" like he was awake." We need to make sure.
I asked Chris last night about it. I said do you remember it happening? He kinda paused, and looked a little confused. He kinda weakly said ya, but it was kinda fuzzy. I was tired mom. I then asked him about his faces he makes (he has done this since he was 2, but I always thought it was just him showing me he was mad instead of talking. He was a late talker. I never thought about how he's now 10, and he still does it from time to time)
He really didn't give me a clear answer on whether he realizes he makes the face, he just started laughing and doing it on purpose at that moment. But it wasn't the same face he does. He was just purposly rolling his eyes to the back of his head, because it was a funny thing to do.
So, I plan to call the doctor and tell him what Chris said, and then probably get him in to do a sleep induced eeg, to see if there really is some seizure's going on.
Renee, I know you do have some expericence on the seizure thing here. Can you tell me what you think? Has your dd had a sleep induced eeg, and what did it all entail? Anyone else who can also tell me about their experience with stims and seizure's will help too.
BTW He has started to make this strange noise, its like closing your teeth and making a tsssss tsssss tssss sound, but its really obnoxious and sounds like a loud sprinkler head going on lol. He started yesterday when he got home from school and has repetivetly been doing it over and over and over again. Its driving me crazy as he purposely will run up and do it in our ears. Is that a tic? A stim? Or just an annoying behavior???????
Thanks,
Lainie

Lainie,
Good luck with the rest of the testing. I'm pulling for you guys and hope you get some help finally from the school. I'm sorry I don't have any experience with seizures.

Lainie,
My kids don't have epilepsy or seizures, but I do (since July '06).

Actually forgetting the episode is not neccessarily a sign of a seizure. It is pretty common amung ASD kids or kids with rage/meltdown type issues. Actually any kid with rage type issues can do this. They go into a fight or flight mode and afterwards will often not have total recall of the event. It isn't neccesarily seizure related.
Also, take into account AS language issues and thier concrete nature. For instance, what he means by he doesn't really remember may not be the same as what you think he means. This is a common problem with communication with ASD kids. He could just mean that heck it was yesterday and he doesn't remember ALL the EXACT details (that would so be one of my kids, lol).
That said, since seizures can run in ASD kids getting a EEG won't hurt. It is relatively easy but if you are going to push for one I would get a 24 hour ambulatory EEG. You go in one day, they connect the leads and send you home with this box thing and a log. Then you go back the next day and they take them off. That is about all there is to it.

Thank you, you guys! I just got home from work. I appreciate your info. I wasn't quite sure what they were going to do. I had Tony call the NP and leave a message about the fuzzyness and feeling weird when they happen.
Chris goes back on mMonday for more testing, so I can talk to him more about it then.
Thanks too about the other board Paula, I never thought about looking for it lol. This place has every kinda board doesn't it? lol
