OK....I couldn't resist the pun because yesterday was Sam's 7 Bday and today is his party! Jeeze, he is so tall now and growing into such a darned cute boy. He wants to grow his hair so he can pull it back like a Samurai (he's into Japanese culture) so it's all shaggy like those guys in the Old Navy commercials. He looks just like his Dad's school pics from the '70's! He wanted a snake for his gift! EEEk, I'm not really afraid of snakes but the feeding of live, furry food freaks me out a bit. So we agreed to a gecko instead. He's so excited.

I talked to my advocate about the rock and removal at recess. I called the principal to set up an appt. with the advocate present. She asked who said Sam wouldn't be having recess for the rest of the year and that she hadn't heard exactly what happened that day. I think she was lying through her teeth, so I'm writing a summarization letter to his teacher to document the conversation we had that informed me he wouldn't be having recess for the rest of the year. She then hemmed and hawed about having meetings all next week; I stayed quiet waiting for her to come up with a date. Why in the world do people become teachers and principals if they can't be bothered to help the kids who need help the most?!?! I can understand her conundrum of budgets...etc, but she could at least come to the table with a what-can-we-do-to-fix-this attitude instead of obviously being bothered by my desire to actually get my son what he needs to succeed. Sam told me that day that he thinks that we shouldn't have ever had him.......sigh....I can't believe my 7 is having thoughts like that.

My advocate and I are keeping the idea of sending him out of district and having our SD foot the bill in mind. She knows all the procedures for that and I have a call into a nearby Psych. Hospitals school to see what kind of program they have. We need to allow the school to at least try to meet his needs first and then show that what they are doing isn't enough or appropriate. They won't want to send him out because it'll cost more.....so I'm curious to see how this will go. We've decided to send him to the ESY *and* do the 3hrs/week reading tutoring. We'll see how that goes.

Happy Birthday Sam! Best of luck with the party.

Great news that you have an advocate in your corner......sounds like that will be a huge help. If they are still talking about not allowing him to have recess......can you get an OT to state that he NEEDS outdoor recess for sensory reasons/stress relief? Just throwing ideas out there.

Good luck,
