It has been a rough couple of weeks for me and Everett.

I read your email, and possibly see my future! My ds is almost 9, so not as much homework. However I have to constantly keep in touch with the teacher regarding book reports etc. and make sure he is completing the in class portions so we don't have a last minute panic.

I am wondering if your son is on an IEP or a 504 plan with accomodations and if the teacher could email you daily, or keep his homework on a handout for you to see daily. In my dd's 5th grade (public school) they have a personal organizer that the school provides (we pay $10) and she is to write her homework and assignments in it every day. The teachers also post the assigments on their classroom web page so I can double check. She doesn't have attention issues or anything, so it has never been a problem.

I would call an IEP meeting or a meeting with the teacher. Your son sounds like he is so bright. The teachers are aware of how competitive NY public schools are. You should be able to get their cooperation to make sure you can check his assignments to have his grades reflect his true abilities - not just the ability to perform in class.

Good luck with this!

Definitely call an IEP meeting!

So do you think he is "losing" the assignments on purpose so he doesn't have to do them?

Thank you all for your advice.

He does have an IEP; however the lovely city of New York is horrible.
