Hi, I am not a regular poster but I am a regular reader. I have a DS 6.5 who is undxed but we are on the drs waiting list.

Anyway, DH came home tonight and told me that he will be in Manhattan on business for a week beginning of Feb. Since we homeschool I thought DS and I might tag along. We are from Chicago so I don't expect a break from the weather, but a change of pace would be nice.

DS is an avid museum goer and we he just began reading The Mixed Up Files of Mrs Basil E Frankweiler so a trip to the Museum of Art would be perfect. I am wondering about other museum recommendations or other activitries that he and I could do together during the day while DH is working.

We would be staying at or near the Hampton Inn Mangattan-Madison Square Garden. Getting around is my biggest fear as I am horrible at directions. SO any insight you would ahve to keep us entertained and well fed would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Heather

I have been to NYC
The Grayline bus service is fantastic
It's going to take you to the upper of lower Manhattan
Look into it to see if you could get to your museum
Taxi service is AWFUL
It's overpirced

Good Luck

Hi Heather,

Well first off, post directly to me through email sara@speakeasy.org. As we are also homeschooling, maybe we can show you around some. Sadly, I am limited by having to work, but I'd be GLAD to take a little time off. Malcolm read that book last year and his reading class culminated the book with a trip to the museum!

Subway is just not hard to use to get around, and City buses. If the wweather is nice (which it has been off and on), walking can also be fun. From Madison Aquare garden to Metropolitan Art Museum would be a long walk, but fairly quick on subway. Malcolm could show you how to do it. I think getting around on subway is much easier than trying to drive around an area you don't know, also you will find New Yorkers very helpful if you do get turned around. We like to take care of our tourists.

What are your son's intersts? There's the Native American Museum, which is free, down at bottom of Island, also where Staten Island Ferry is and Statue of Liberty. There's the television and broadcasting Museum above Times Square in 50s and Central Park itself has lots of interesting areas, including the Zoo. Are you only looking for around where you are staying? The closest tourist-y thing is the Empire State Building, that's walking distance.

I'm very happy to help out. But I hope you will be willing to try using public transit a little, as that can be fun, too! We do take cabs when Malcolm is overwhelmed, BTW, yes they are overpriced but sometimes just necessary. And as I said, maybe we can show you around some, that would be fun!

yours,

Sara and Malcolm
