LOL, Thats Ok Debbie, yesterday we were at the Wild Animal Park and Mike did great. Heck we blended in like a typical family and I was thinking, "Gee when Debbie gets here she is going to think I am crazy". Then we figured it was about time to leave and had headed toward the more crowded main area of the park and Mike had had enough by then. He was jumping around doing his weird thing and making his noises. Totally overstimmed but this was 4 hours in and during a transition (getting ready to leave).
Point being our kids can hold it together sometimes for a decent amount of time when they need too. Particularly if it is an activity that is a good one for them. Swimming often is a great ASD activity. Yesterday was great for us because 1)we were basically walking in nature and were in the back area of the park where there was not many people and 2) Mike had his iPod on and music calms him plus every other teen boy at the park had on iPods and pretended thier families didn't exist. I would say he was more interactive than most of those boys actually.
I know if I had met you for a short visit at a pool (less than a few hours) I would not assume you were crazy about Isaac's ASD in that situation because you just can't know in that kind of situation. It is the same reason why good doctors get a complete history and lots of other info before making a diagnosis.
