Savant in reading?

Is there such a thing as a Savant in reading? We finally calculated the other day that 13yo dd can read about 3-5 pages per minute. It made me think of "Rainman" and how he could see the box of dropped toothpicks and instantly know how many toothpicks there were. Can you do that with reading, where you open a page and instantly see and comprehend all the words?

Wow! She's a fast reader. Has she ever played Brain Age on the Nintendo DS? One of the tests is a syllable count. They give you a short passage to read and see how long it takes you to finish it, dividing it into syllables per second I think. Anyway, my son and I love it. It's fun if you like those kind of brain games.

Oops. My communication was poor. I meant the generic "you" as in "is it possible for someone to be a Savant in reading -- does such a thing exist?"

Sorry for asking it weird. (I know that *I* definitely can't read that fast!)

Yes, you can "read" by seeing groups of words and taking them in as a whole.

I am not sure. I googled it really quick and did not see much. Probably just a gift. Is she hyperlexic ? Does that go with it ? I have never really read a lot about hyperlexia.
