I think I started this with the intent to vent, but now I am calm and maybe it can be chalked up to a learning experience.

Bradon(5) PDD-NOS(and many other dx's), had his clip moved yesterday for disrupting the class room.

Sounds as though he needs lots more OT than he's getting! Is it possible for him to sit to the side (so that he doesn't have people behind him), maybe then he'd be close enough to the teacher w/o anyone behind making him nervous or making noises he can't see.

My almost 5 year old w/ SID spends about 1/4 of his day standing on his head (or being wrapped up tight in a blanket). He does this esp when there is more people around or he's in a situation he doesn't like where he's having to be quiet and he doesn't quite know what to expect (he stands on his head in store dressing rooms, while waiting for his sisters to get done w/ ballet, etc). Is it possible that he needs more structure in his day, or he needs to be more sure of what is happening (visual cues and schedule), would a weighted vest, lap weight or compression vest help? Are there things the OT can do or give him to help him stay in the classroom and still get that vestibular input?

HTH!

Hey, you handled it well and good for you. Good for teh teacher who is willing to learn and make changes. I love teachers like that. Many general ed teachers really don't have the tools for what to do with an ASD kid and the ones who are willing to learn have always been the best.

I agree, he needs more OT. Mike spent most of his 2nd grade year upside down I believe. He got clinical OT for about 6 months with a heavy emphasis on vestibular activities and it has helped him tons and tons with that particular issue. Now he saves his spinning, etc for home.

BTW, I am taking classes and had a conversation with one of the teachers the other nigt. This is a class most are taking to clear their credential so they may have been teaching for up to 5 years or so and are taking this requisite class. I told one about my dd's epilepsy and she was shocked that cait doesn't wear a helmet. There are many more stories and these are good folks they just don't have the background and exposure that we do.
