I posted this on the special education plans board...but was wondering what you all thought as well.
I have my ds's conference tomorrow. He's 7 and in 2nd grade. The school has done pretty well with following his IEP, from what I can see. But now I'm questioning some things, that I don't believe are taking place.
In his IEP, it states that he get 225mpw for written language and 225mpw for math. These are 2 things he does need help with. It states that the person responsible is the spec ed teacher and its to be done in the general ed classroom. After talking to Nathan, it seems as though this is not taking place. That is 45 minutes A DAY for math AND 45 minutes for written language!!
My question......how do I know this is taking place? Do they have this documented somewhere? Or do I just ask for future documentation? What if they claim that he IS getting this assistance?

Depends on the level of services.
For instance, from what you tell me he is getting 45 minutes of written language and 45 minutes of math in general education. The special educator being the responsible one does NOT neccessarily mean she is doing all the teaching herself. In fact if it is in the general education classroom I highly doubt she is. What is likely happening is that the special ed teacher is consulting with the general ed teacher and the general ed teacher is providing the services in class. It may be part of his regular written language or math class but instead they are adding modifications and such so he can be successful along with his general education peers.
Therefore, Nathan may not even NOTICE if he is getting these services. They are meant to be seemless so the child is successful without standing out as different. If this works for a child and they are successful then that is FANTASTIC but if they are not then they may need to increase the level of services and make is a more restrictive specialized type thing (ie pull out to the resource room)
What I would do at the conference is to make sure to ask alot of questions about his progress in those areas on his general ed report card as well as his IEP progress report. Have them explain to you exactly what they are doing, what Nathan is doing, and how he is progressing with this type of support. If you dont understand anything because they slip into edu-ese, make them explain in human terms. They will usually gladly.

Thanks!
I'm planning on asking lots of questions! I think I will ask to have the services increased for math and written language, he seems to really be behind in these areas. The last thing I want is for him to get further behind than he already is!! I also have to talk to them about reducing his homework....they make him bring everything home, that he does not finish in class. And sometimes this comes home with no instructions!!! And as we all know, its hard to get our kids to relay messages from school!
Wish me luck!!
