School violence in our area...

Today a 16 year old boy was stabbed to death at a school a few towns over from where I live. He was killed by a 15 year old fellow classmate. My husband and I were watching the news just now and they said that the boy who killed the other boy has Asperger's and has been on medication & seeing a psychiatrist for years. My heart just sank. They are charging this kid as an adult and they showed him in the courtroom and he looks completely bewildered. I feel so incredibly bad for the poor boy who died. Only 16, his whole life ahead of him. The school isn't saying too much yet about whether these kids had a history of fighting with each other or what. They think the boy w/AS may have gone off his meds.

OMG, that is so scary and horrible. Life really just sucks sometimes. Those poor families.

I am sure there is more to the story than meets the eye. Perhaps the child was being bullied by the other and there weren't any supports or help in place for him because he was so "high functioning" don't ya know. Perhaps he was medicated but they had an opposite effect and weren't working (like for instance those kids who take anti-depressants and then become suicidal). Perhaps he went off his meds.

Or perhaps everyone was doing everything they could or had the resources for and autism just got too big for them all. This is when I say that Aspergers is NOT a "mild" anything.

In any case, it is a horrible situation and now 2 familieshave thier lives completely ruined. Very very very sad and scary.

Ditto what Renee said.

There is bound to be a lot more to the story.

Whatever it is: It's too late now.

Hey, I am wondering where you are from? Mass by any chance. (please remember my ADHD side and I am really bad with this kind of detail. You may have already told me)

Some friends came over tonight and told me about a school killing in Sudbury, MA which isn't all that terribly far from where I grew up.

Hi Renee,
I am from MA. I live a four or five towns over from Sudbury. ITA with what you said about not knowing the whole story. That's exactly what I thought when I heard the kid has AS. The whole thing just breaks my heart.

Are you originally from MA.?

Yeah, I am originally from Millville. I know you won't know where that is. It is TEENY! But it is a small old fashioned town right near the border of Rhode Island. In fact my oldest 3 kids were all born in MA and we lived in Blackstone until about 7 years ago.

Millville is RIGHT next to blackstone. In fact they share a school district (it is regionalized there too).

As a matter of fact, when we lived in Blackstone Cait (and Mike until we moved) attended the special ed preschool in Millville because that is where the preschool Sped program was.
